The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

seems like you have a vector which contains LPCSTRs....

then you can dereference the iterator as
LPCSTR str = (*it);

oh, sorry my previous comment. i dint see vector <int>.......

Something like this would work...

#include <sstream>

std::stringstream ss; // String stream to convert int to string
ss << *it; // Convert
std::string const & sConverted = ss.str(); // Get converted string
LPCSTR str = sConverted.c_str(); // Assign c-string pointer to LPCSTR

>>>> LPCSTR str = sConverted.c_str();
That is somewhat dangerous as the sConverted string (and the pointer it returns to the internal char buffer) is only valid for the current scope ( == the current {} block)

If you need to pass the LPCSTR to some function, you could do it directly:

    some_function(sConverted.c_str());

But some_function shouldn't store the pointer.

If you need to store the pointer you better use a static char buffer:

    static char buf[32] = { '\0' };
    itoa(*it, buf, 10);

    some_function(buf);   // buf can be passed as LPCSTR == const char *

It's perfectly safe for as long as sConverted is in scope and is indeed why the temporary returned from ss.str() has been bound to a reference, to ensure it stays in scope. Just to clarify, the C++ standard guarantees that a temporary that is bound to a reference will stay in scope for the lifetime of the reference to which it is bound.

Incidentally, this is the same for any pointer that points to a resource... it is only valid for the lifetime of that resource so I'm not quite sure why this would be any different!

The only thing to consider is whether a separate pointer variable actually was needed. If it wasn't needed- and I can't see a reason - it should be omitted, i. e. the sConverted.c_str() should be used without storing it into a variable.

LPCSTR is a Windows typedef for 'const char*'. For a few WINAPI functions, e. g. PostMessage function, the LPCSTR pointer passed as an argument needs to be valid beyond the current scope. So, if it isn't clear whether the pointer was used in some asynchronous context, it should point to a member or a static buffer.

Agreed, but the Q specifically asked for "conversion vertor Iterator to LPCSTR" so that's what I've shown.

Anyway, since we seem to agree (mostly) and since I think it is now clear that the resource must, obviously, be within scope for the pointer to be valid, I'm sure we can leave it at that :)

Thanks Alex.

many thanks to both of you, now I got a running code. I changed you sample to a Pascal Like function
One minor Item:
better use stringStream or ostringStream?

There is no need to take a copy of the string in the function, just return the result direct from stringstream.
