The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

VS2003, Blank Design Window, Slow "File Open" dialog navigation

I asked a similar question recently and we thought we had an answer, but the problem has recurred.

I'm working with an unmanaged C++ solution, having several projects, in VS2003.  On a dual screen setup, with VS2003 on monitor 2, a blank window titled "(my solution) - Microsoft Visual C++ [design] - (my cpp file)" shows up.  The solution name is the one currently open and the cpp file name is the one I'm looking at in the IDE.

When this blank window appears, "File Open" dialog navigation is very slow.

How can I make that window go away?

Hi josgood,

I hated VS2003, it mis-behaved in many various ways. I find 2005 a whole much better user experience (if some what demanding on resources). I know it's a pain but have you considered removing it and reinstalling? I found with VS2003 that this often cured (for a while a least) most of the odd things it did :)

Also, if you haven't already done so you you consider installing the latest Service Pack, which seems to be SP1 at this time.

Hi evilrix,

I very much agree on 2005.  I have that on my home machine and like it much better.  One more project at work and then we'll be moving to 2005 there also -- now that 2008 is available!

If driven to it, I may uninstall and reinstall 2003.  Nothing else I have tried seems to correct the problem.

For the moment, I'll grimace and bear it.

Have a great day!

Joe

I'll try the service pack when I go in tomorrow.

It can't hurt and who knows?  (And the worst that can happen is that I have to take your other advice!)

Thanks.

Joe

Hi josgood. I was just wondering how you got on with this?

02.12.2008 at 07:21AM PST, ID: 20875539
Hi evilrix,

I apologize for the delay in answering.  Events have been pressing (meaning long work hours).

I haven't tried either of your suggestions because:
1)  The problem comes and goes.  Right now its gone.
2)  My team members asked me to not install SP1 to ensure our dev environments are as identical as possible.

However, one or the other of your suggestions will clearly fix the problem, so its time to close out this question and award the points.

I appreciate your help and again apologize for the delay.

Thank you.

Joe
