windows root system32 hal.dll missing or corrupt files

I recently had the problem with the windows root system32 hal.dll missing or corrupt files thing. I followed the instructions to fix it from this website by basically reinstalling my windows xp system, and that worked great. I can go onto the harddrive and access my old important files and pictures, but that is it. All of my old programs are in the program files folder in my computer, and I've only been able to reinstall adobe. My question is: do I need to reinstall everything (internet explorer, wordperfect, etc.) or can I get back to the old setup somehow?

A repaired Windows install may permit your applications to continue on, however, if you installed new you will likely need to reinstall most of your applications.  Application install processes create files and registry entries that are required for the apps to run.

Let me guess you just added or removed a  harddrive
or restored from an image..
or reinstalled onto a different partition..

windows root system32 hal.dll missing or corrupt files

is really telling you you are booting from a different hard drive or
partition the the original install was installed onto
