Question

eclipse ganymede start up issue

Asked by: dkim18

Hi Experts,

I was using eclipse ganymede without any problem until now. Now, if I try to open eclipse ganymede, it display message such as...

JVM terminated exitcode=-1
...
...
...

with "OK" button at the bottom.

It doesn't even ask work space and if I click ok button the eclipse exits.
Restart my pc doesn't help.

Any ideas?

thx,

p.s.

I figured out I have this problem.

Error occurred during initialization of VM
Could not reserve enough space for object heap

but still trying to resolve this issue.

I got "Your java is working" msg.

by: arober11Posted on 2009-08-13 at 15:33:12ID: 25093703

What OS are you running on?

For starters download a Clean minimal "IDE for Jave Developers" unpack into a temporary directory.

Start the new copy and if you can open a New workspace, then your old it's going to be your old config.

If it's the old config start to compare the config files, starting with .../eclipse/eclips.ini   (Even if they are the same and you have free memory to spare you might want to increase the max mem values).

by: dkim18Posted on 2009-08-13 at 15:42:13ID: 25093787

I run wins xp pro.
I have old eclipse version(3.2.2) and it's config is:

-vmargs
-Xms128m
-Xmx512m
-XX:MaxPermSize=256M

and it runs ok.

This is the eclipse.ini for ganymede:

-showsplash
org.eclipse.platform
--launcher.XXMaxPermSize
256M
-framework
plugins\org.eclipse.osgi_3.4.3.R34x_v20081215-1030.jar
-vmargs
-Dosgi.requiredJavaVersion=1.5
-Xms128m
-Xmx512m

I don't understand why old version runs ok.

by: arober11Posted on 2009-08-13 at 15:57:28ID: 25093896

As an experiment try doubling the max memory parameters e.g.

512M

-Xmx1024m

by: dkim18Posted on 2009-08-13 at 16:00:41ID: 25093919

I changed like this:

-showsplash
org.eclipse.platform
--launcher.XXMaxPermSize
512M
-framework
plugins\org.eclipse.osgi_3.4.3.R34x_v20081215-1030.jar
-vmargs
-Dosgi.requiredJavaVersion=1.5
-Xms128m
-Xmx1024m

but same thing.

Once I save eclipse.ini file, I don't have to restart my pc. right?

by: arober11Posted on 2009-08-13 at 17:26:08ID: 25094399

Yep, just re-start eclipse.

In the .../eclipse/configuration/ directory do you have a .log file, if you do what's near the end?

by: arober11Posted on 2009-08-13 at 17:46:26ID: 25094485

Per tha manual:  http://www.eclipse.org/eclipse/platform-core/documents/3.1/debug.html

You may wish to run it with to clean you config:

eclipse.exe -clean

Either from the command prompt or:
* Right click the Eclipse Icon
* Select Properties
* Append a "-clean",
Click OK
Start Eclipse.
See what happens, remember to remove the "-clean".

by: dkim18Posted on 2009-08-13 at 19:35:09ID: 25094884

I don't see a .log file under ../eclipse/configuration/ dir
If I append "-clean", it works. But if I remove it, I still have the same problem.

by: arober11Posted on 2009-08-14 at 01:21:05ID: 25096055

So it's your configuration, again per the http://www.eclipse.org/eclipse/platform-core/documents/3.1/debug.html page, have a look through the alternate log locations to try and locate the log.

So it's your XMLViewPart perspective that's causing the issue.

!MESSAGE Could not create view: 'org.eclipse.ve.internal.java.codegen.editorpart.XMLViewPart'.

If you can get in to your workbenck using the -clean option, then close the XML perspective, reset the properties to the default values, exit and try to get back in without the -clean.

by: dkim18Posted on 2009-08-14 at 08:45:19ID: 25099309

I reset the properties to the default values for XML preferences(windows-->preferences). (But since I have not changed the XML preference, nothing really has been changed even if I clicked default button.) I tried without the -clean, but same problem.
Another problem I had was that I changed to old values in eclipse.ini and started eclipse and without doing much I had out of memory error and had to exit workbench.

If you haven't changed that much, download a fresh copy of Ganymede, and use that.

Will be a lot quicker that trying to work out what plug-in / setting change is causing the issue.

by: dkim18Posted on 2009-08-14 at 09:38:32ID: 25099949

I downloaded a fresh copy of Ganymede yesterday and tried to launch, but had same problem.

by: arober11Posted on 2009-08-14 at 09:49:40ID: 25100051

That implies the problems in your Workspace.

Create a new temporary workspace, open that, replicate you CVS/SVN setting and and import one project at a time, from you current workspace, until you have the lot or it all stops working. At which point you'll know which project is casuing the problems.

by: dkim18Posted on 2009-08-14 at 09:56:55ID: 25100109

hm...that doesn't make sense to me. Again, I downloaded a fresh copy of Ganymede yesterday and when I tried to launch a fresh copy, I had the problem. I didn't even specify workspace at that point yet.

by: dkim18Posted on 2009-08-14 at 09:58:14ID: 25100120

Besides, I think I started to have this problem after I import a project from CVS. So, I deleted that project from file system and eclipse, but didn't help.

You've said your JRE install is fine, but if you have time uininstall all the JRE on your machine, re-boot and re-install the lates JRE from the Java site.

I deleted all previous java and reinstalled the latest jre. (it was a long process and much trouble.) I checked this site and it's working fine.
http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml

But when I launch eclipse ganymede, I still have the same problem. Eclipse 3.2 still works fine. I checked the log and I only saw error message when I tried to delete jboss server from eclipse 3.2.
I think this may not be the jre issue. I get same error when I try a fresh copy of eclipse ganymede. Geez...what is it then...?

Only other suggestion is have a look through / ask the question on the Eclipse Comunity Forum: http://www.eclipse.org/forums/ or clone.

I made absolutely certain that Eclipse is using the JVM that I wanted and it worked!
