Question

Netbeans Platform : Implementing an EditorKit

Asked by: henrythacker

Hi there,

I am using the latest version of the Netbeans platform - I am trying to add a simple text pad to the application that may be used just to type quick notes. I could just slap a JEditorPane into a TopComponent and then display these, but this doesn't seem to be a very elegant solution. There doesn't seem to be much documentation for Netbeans Platform around at the moment - or what I have found has been very conflicting. I want to use the in-built editor kits as I assume these have the correct interfaces for making the Save/Printing buttons work, etc?

Any light that anyone can shed would be great!

>>I want to use the in-built editor kits

Which are these?

by: henrythackerPosted on 2007-05-14 at 12:26:25ID: 19087756

Sorry I didn't explain that very well - I mean like Editor Kits which are built into the platform for editing content like java files.

Basically - i want to implement a screen like the code editor for Java, but without all of the code-completion features, etc.. just for editing text files. I want to do this so the text files which are created may be saved / printed as the text interfaces in Netbeans IDE can be.

I believe it's stuff in the org.openide.text package - maybe I am going the wrong way about this... maybe i need to find a decendant of TopComponent to use which already contains the text area and the logic required?

>>maybe I am going the wrong way about this

I don't see why - seems like a good idea to me. If you get hold of the source you could be on to a good thing

I was hoping that delving into the source would be a last resort! Hopefully someone will have used the Platform extensively. I am SURE that implementing an editor must be a really common thing to do, so someone must know!

Yes - i picked this up in the Java TA, so was not expecting an in-depth query of this kind ;-)

This could help you along perhaps..?

Well the javadoc is great if you understand how the platform is constructed - when I get a feeling for how the elements work together, it will be more helpful. It would be nice if they spend some time getting some tutorials together (they have tutorials, but they are just pre-written code and don't show you the construction steps). I posted this to both the Netbeans and Java TA so hopefully one of the groups of people that surf EE will know the answer! :)

Not elegant but it is the very basic way :)

Well I think I have solved it by creating a new file type for text files - I think this automatically sorts out an editor for the filetype. The only problem is, I can't persuade the New Project window to appear. I need to this to appear so I can select a file type to create. Does anyone know how to make the menu item appear (I imagine it may be part of Netbeans instead of the platform).

by: objectsPosted on 2007-05-16 at 06:43:43ID: 19100669

the menu's not really related to the editor.
