I call an external program(MFC program written by me) like the following

...
...
run("c:\my_application 1")
Messagebox("title", "message")
...
...

I want power builder to print message box after "my_application" ends.

best regards

We always just open a response window and in place the run command in the open (or other) event. The response window as you know causes the processing to stop. The trick is determining when the processing (from your Run command) is complete (like existence of a file, etc.) and closing the response window to let processing continue.

kisv,

I was thinking more about how you would close the response window when your process ends...

The easiest way is a timer event that checks for existence, non-existence of a file, etc.  But if you have no control over what this external program does maybe in the timer event you could call a windows API function to check and see if that "exe" is running... if so keep window open, if not close the response window and your app continues as you wanted. Of course the response window doesn't have to be visible.

Hi Kisv,

Try this:

In the called application:

  1. In the application or window Open event of called
     application:

     string ls_handle
     ls_handle = CommandParm()  // get the run argument
     if isnumber(ls_handle) then
        il_handle = long(ls_handle)
     end if

  2. Sending a message for the caller application:

     Post(il_handle, 1024 , wparam , lparam) (async)
     Send(il_handle, 1024 , wparam , lparam) (sync)
        where:
           il_handle, is the handle of the caller window
        wparam = 0
        lparam = 0 (or a return parameter)

     Must be the last activity in the called application

     Send(handle, 1024, 0, 0) send a message to pbm_custom01,
     Send(handle, 1025, 0, 0) send a message to pbm_custom02, ...

---

In the caller application:

  1. In the caller window, define a user event mapped for
     pbm_custom01

     This user event will receive a message from step 2
        above

  2. Run the called application, passing the handle of the
     window

     string ls_handle
     ls_handle = string(handle(parent))

     Run ("pbcalled.exe " + ls_handle, minimized!)

  3. The caller window still opened for receive the message

  4. If the caller application is locked for the user
     until the called appl ends, define the window as
     response and code the close event for prevent from
     closing.

  5. If the caller application is free for processing,
     the user will receive a message when called appl
     ends

  6. Put your Messagebox("title", "message") in the
     user event.

the _spawn suite of functions in "msvcrt.dll" are used for this but their calls are a bit tricky to convert to PB external function calls. there are several version of the spawn function depending on they calling environment and flags, one of the flags deterimines wether the calling thread pauses and waits for the called app to execute.

Do you need to pass params? one of the params of one of the veriosn of spawn requires a pointer to array of char *( an array of strings in C ), i'm not sure you can pass that in PB.

I think the easiest way would be to write you params to a file, when your called app is run have it open the file exclusivly, then get your PB app to loop attempting to open the file, remember to call yield() in your loop to give the os a chance to process messages. So when your called app finsishes it writes it results back to the locked file, closes it and exits.

You pb loop should then finish and grab the results back, also remember to code in a timeout if you can reasonably predict the behaviour of the other program.

Hi kisv,

I use the following for Dos programms....

- Create two structures
- Create a non-visual object (ex unv_dos).
- Copy the declarations in Declarations Local External Functions
- Create a object function of_run_dos and copy the script you find below into this function
- save the object

Now you can create the non-visual object where you need it as follows:

unv_dos  lnv_dos
string   ls_command

lnv_dos = CREATE unv_dos
ls_command = 'c:\dos\mybatch.bat parm1 parm2'
lnv_dos.uf_run_dos(ls_command, TRUE)
DESTROY lnv_dos

This works great.
Good luck!
Hans
