In my application controller, would it be acceptable to do this?

before_filter :login_required, :except => [ :login ]

In other words, folks have no business "viewing or doing" until logged in.

First, would it work?

yes it would work... it's actually common practice to do this.

The main implication is that you'll have to put all of your non-protected pages into that :except statement.

It could get messy:
:except => [:login, :signup, :about, :refer, :contact]
... and so on.

But, sure, it saves having to remember to put that before_filter in each individual controller.
