Question

3D Studio Max - How do I get the cloth modifier to completely cover the object?

Asked by: kimberlys777

I'm a complete beginner in 3ds max.  I'm trying to create a model of a bed with a blanket draped over the top of it, but the mattress keeps showing through the blanket.
I made blanket from a plane and set it as the "cloth" and set the mattress and boxspring as collision objects.  I even played around with some of the settings, but the best I can get is the attached picture.  How can I get the blanket to cover the mattress and boxspring without the mattress and boxspring showing through?  (I don't need it to be animated, it can just lay on the bed.)
Thanks!

Give the blanket some thickness.

by: kimberlys777Posted on 2009-06-03 at 09:13:58ID: 24538138

I can give thickness to a plane?  If I've already converted it to an editable poly, do I have to re-create it?

by: jgordosPosted on 2009-06-03 at 09:22:56ID: 24538232

no, you can't give thickness to a plane...

And if you've turned it into an editable poly, extrude the poly a teeny bit and redrape it...  you'll need normals that face out on both sides of the blanket

Thanks, I'll try extruding the poly, adjusting the normals (I think I saw a tutorial on that!) and redraping it.  Can I render it without the animation?  I'm just trying to create a bedroom scene with no animation -- I just want it to lay flat on the bed.

render it with an animation length of one frame...

I tried extrusion and also tried a shell modifier to give it thickness.  Now the blanket's thicker, but the mattress is now peaking through more than before.  I attached a gif that shows the settings and the result.
Thanks.

Greetings,

A single-sided mesh such as a plane will work just fine with the cloth modifier.  Most likely, the problem you are experiencing is the result of a lack of vertices on your blanket.  Since it's the vertices that put out "feelers" for collision objects, if you have too few, the edges of your collision object will be missed - as evident in your attached images.  My recommendation is to increase the polygon count of your plane.

Additionally, a higher Subsample value in the Simulation Parameters section will provide more accuracy and is most helpful with fast moving objects.  Consider a fast moving object that at frame 30 is just about to strike your collision object, but at frame 31 has already passed through your object due to its speed.  Subsamples allow the cloth simulation to check for collision at fractional frame intervals and is more likely to capture a collision - at a cost of render time of course.

Finally, in cases where I have been completely unsuccessful with cloth collisions, increasing the size of my simulation geometry has resulted in better collision detection...but this is a last resort option because changing the scale ultimately throws off the physical accuracy of the simulation.

I hope this is helpful.  Good luck!

Fantastic!  Increasing the vertices did the trick.  Thanks so much!

Glad that worked.  Looks great!

Also, I caught an error in my response above: At the end of the second paragraph that should read "at a cost of simulation time" rather than "render time".

Have fun!
