any plugins for 3ds max (or any 3d rendering program) that will color nodes of a spline?

Giving color to objects in 3ds max is easy, however coloring nodes is much harder to script.  I am looking to color nodes of a spline and animate this without resorting to hacks.  Nodes are funny in max because certain properties of it seem to be easily controlled (like x,y,z), but others (like color) are not.

Any plugins or ways of approaching this problem that you can recommend?
