I tried saving it Photoshop, tga, tiff, and gif.. but all save with a black background that can't be removed (I do see the alpha channels in Photoshop though but I still can't delete the black background). How do I do this?

Unfortunately, the background image isn't a separate layer in Photoshop. I wish it was so I can just delete it or change it. But the generated Photoshop file (from Maya) just gives one layer with the image and the background flattened together.
I tried using the magic wand earlier, but it came out really bad because there is some black in the image itself, not just the background. I selected using the magic wand, then selected similiar, when right clicked. This selected all areas that had the background color. Then I deleted it. That's where it didn't come out good.
I plan on using this image on the web, but I need a transparent background because it's going against another background on the web.

In that case you MUST follow the step 1.
When you've done that, you could try the magic wand again, making sure continguous is ON. To deselect unwanted selections, use ALT + rectangular selection tool.
If the magic wand doesn't work, use the pen tool to trace around the outline of the image, then convert it to a selection (Paths Palette). The Select > Inverse, then DELETE.
It's difficult to come up with instructions without seeing the image. Often I combine 2 or 3 selection techniques.

(1)Open the layers palette in Photoshop. If you see a locked layer called "Background". Double click on this layer, then, in the dialogue box that comes up, click "OK". Otherwise, just go to step (2)
(2) Select the background. If it's all one colour, you can select it with the magic wand tool. Otherwise, you may need to trace around the outline of the maya model with the path tool, then conevrt it to a selection.
Ask if you need more help or further explanation on these points.
