I tried to "render to texture" a simple teapot in box with mental ray, and it took nearly an hour!!!!!!
The same scene renders in the viewport in less than 5 minutes.
Anyone know what is going on here?

To be honest, I've never done a "Render to Texture" as the majority of my experience is with static non-animated models. I've done some work with Photo-realism with reflections, etc. and you start taking huge performance hits. I noticed this question had been open for some time so I thought I'd chip in. I'm doing some reading now on Global Illumination with Mental Ray and it seems people are claiming slowness with GI. I'll post more information as I find it.
What are your raytracing options?
