What 3D software do you recommend?

Hi,

i'm thinking of getting started with 3D in a while, but because i'm a total noob in this i ask for everybody's opinion.
First of all, i'm a web developer, so it would be nice if i could use my 3D efforts in flash for example.
I'm using a mac, so 3D studio max is out of the question i think.
Also if you know some good starting-point tutorials...
