Question

Problem with Depth Buffer on NVidia TNT

Asked by: jur9103

I have trouble with NVidia TNT graphics card when i'm drawing skybox in my engine. on G-Force class HW all works great, but on TNT instead of skybox texture thereis only something like "rays" not texture. i'm drawing with z-buffer disabled (glDepthMask(false);)

i figured out that when i enable z-buffer everithing is ok, but i have to extend size of the box. i'm forced to extend far plane in projection matrix too. and after this i have z-fighting with terain and terain objects at long distance.

Does the problem resove itself (or improve / stay the same) when you change the display from 16 bit color to 32 bit color. Typicaly, this would change the z-buffer from a 16 bit to 32 bit value and improve the resolution.

Are you drawing the skybox then the plane. or fist the plane then the skybox ?  Have you tried using a cylinder or a sphere fro the sky object ?  Could you post a screenshot of the problem somewhere so I can get a better idea of yr problem.

Just a note: you should use

glDepthMask( GL_FALSE );

instead of

glDepthMask( false );

This will guarantee that the value passed has the correct size and doesn't induce any hard to find bugs by sending possibly obscured data.

hi. i solved this problem. main problem was that i had different drawing state then was in opengl. i'm using copy of opengl state (not all flags) for faster test, and if change in state occurs, i change opengl state (textures, blending, depthwriting, ...etc). an error was in difference between opengl default state and my state (mistake in shader structure i'm using).
thanks to all who wanted help me.

btw. i'm searching good forum or something to share experience with 3d programing/grafics (good forum, with people who are experienced and want to share experience)

all points to one who point me to this.

thanks again

I'd assume that http://www.flipcode.com/ has about the most advanced and enthusiastic people on their message board. It is pretty much game-related so you are likely to find people who have all the experience in 3D programming, as well as the theory behind it.
