The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Windows Server SBS 2003 R2 w/o ISA and Playstation 3 (PS3)

Tags: 2003, ps3, server, windows, sbs
I have recently setup a SBS 2003 R2 w/o ISA server for my small business and to handle family email.  The only issue I am running into is I cannot get my PS3 to connect to the internet.  The PS3 was able to connect to the internet prior to the SBS installation, so I know the jnic works.

I have tried the following.

1) Set the PS3 nic as auto config - PS3 nic does not get a IP from the SBS 2003 DHCP server.
2) Set the PS3 nis as manual - manually assined the IP to a excluded IP on the SBS DHCP server, default gateway is the SBS server, DNS1 is the SBS server and DNS2 is the Cable Companies DNS.  I have also read on found some ports to open.  So I open the ports in Routing and Remote Access.  I am not sure if I have all the correct ports open.  Also I configured my laptop IP indentical to solution 2 and my laptop had no problems accessing the internet.

The main thing that perplexes me is Why is the SBS server not issueing a IP to the PS3 automatically, when configured for option1.

Also, I am not sure I am "opening" the ports correctly.  I have open port for other programs using the Routing and Remote Access but I am not sure if this is the correct way or the most efficient.

So, I hope jyou experts can help me out on this one.

Afraid I am not familiar with the PS3. Does it connect wirelessly? If so does your SBS have 2 network adapters? Again, if so I suspect the wireless is on the WAN side of the SBS and therefore not getting an IP from the SBS. Please confirm and maybe we can configure from there.

Thanks for the responce....

1) I have two nics for SBS, 1 nic connected to the internet, 2nd nic connected to the home network.
2) The PS3 Connection is hardwired to the home network.

When the PS3 is setup as solution 1 I get a network timeout error from not getting an IP

When the PS3 is setup as solution 2 I get an error form the PS3 stating that there is a DNS error.  Unfortunatly that is all the info the PS3 gives me.

With my old Lynksys router I was able to specify an ip address as the DMZ.  I there a similar setting in SBS 2003?  If so, what are the steps?  I was not able to find how to set up a ip as a DMZ?  If I cna do that I think it would help. This ways the PS3 would get/send all packets on all ports.

I hope this helps.

Do the other PC's receive an address through DHCP OK? Just to verify DHCP is working properly.

Whether assigning DNS manually or dynamically through DHCP, all devices should point only to the SBS for DNS, the ISP's DNS is added to the server as a forwarder.

As for the DMZ you have to add a 3rd network adapter to the SBS, and usually you add ISA (Internet Security and Acceleration Server). ISA is included if you have SBS premium.

The Windows firewall will definitely be blocking some incoming traffic, but not out going. So the PS3 should at least get an Internet connection.
You don't want to be using RRAS to open ports, that would be done on the SBS firewall, but if you have eliminated the router, that could be risky.

Another option is to configure the SBS using a single NIC, which is common, and then put the PS3 back on the Linksys DMZ.
Please advise if you need instructions on change  2 NICs to 1, there are recommended procedures with SBS.

1) Yes, all the current PCs (4 of them) are getting a IP from the DHCP just fine.
2) All devices do point to the server DNS.
3) I do not have premium so ... ISA is out of the question.
4) Were is the SBS firewall?  I could not find it. If I goto control panel -> firewall, it tells me that the firewall is maintained by the SBS software.  I am currently using the basic firewall that comes with SBS.
5)I was hoping not to change the server config to 1 nic.  Absolutly everything is running perfectly, VPN, Remote Web, Web Outlook, etc.  Also, I am not sure how to point my web addresses to the server if the server is behind a router.

The "Windows Firewall" is disabled if you have RRAS/VPN enabled. The only firewall on the server would be basic NAT, within RRAS.

The main issue would be why it's not obtaining a DHCP address, you can deal with routing and ports after. However, afraid I am not familiar with the units enough to help. I am sure others who are will be along in a while, though quite here on the weekend.. Sounds like basic network is fine.
Are there any updates available for the PS3 that might help?

05.19.2007 at 01:56PM PDT, ID: 19121354
1) Correct, the basic firewall in RRAS, NAT is what I am running.

2) I agree, that the main issue is the PS3 not obtaining the IP from the DHCP Server.  I think it has todo with the SBS server becuase when I was using the Linksys the PS3 was obtaining an IP just fine, plus if I manually assing an IP I get that DNS error.

3) I just updated the PS3 to the latest version, 1.70, last night to see if that would resolve the issue but it did not.

4) I appretiate your help.  I will wait to see if someone else resonds to the issue.  Have a groovy weekend.

I just updated the PS3 to the latest firmware 1.70.

Thanks for the help. It turns out that one of my switches needed to be reset.  I change over all the network to my server using the same IP address range.  I think the switches were routing the data to the wrong connection.  Any way...here are your points.

Thanks Bygbea.
Glad to hear you were able to find the problem.
Cheers !
