Question

Windows Media Player will not find Playstation 3 to share media

Asked by: dougied1982

Hi Everybody,

I am having major issues with Sony PS3 and its Media Server. To be honest I think that it is on my PC's side.

I want to stream the video and music from my PC to my PS3, but every time I cannot see the PS3 in Windows Media Player to allow it access. Every time I try to find the Windows media server from the PS3 it says "no media servers were found"

The two devices are connected to via LAN cable to router as below
Desktop:

Win XP SP2
Static IP Address

Router (Buffalo WHR-G54S)
Ports 3690 forwarded with PS3 IP address (for Win Media Server)

PS3
Static IP Address

I have tried this with different software, Nero, WMP11, TVersity etc etc. None will recognise the playstation.

For example in WMP11;
When I click on Options/Configure Sharing/Share my media  nothing comes up where the PS3 should come up as an unknown device.

I have went through the playstation forums and everybody who experienced the same problem installed TVersity and resolved the issue. I tried the same...no joy.  I have also tried all the other advice they have been given but again no joy.

I do not even have access to a laptop otherwise  would try and do it from it to see if it was my desktop that was the problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have been messing with this for a couple of weeks and am either going to pull my hair out or throw  the PC out the window lol.

thanks very much
Dwayne

Have I posted this in the wrong area or something??

I personnally have not tried it. So this after researching.
set up the Media Library to include all the videos you want, then go into the PS3 menu for Videos, find the video and either copy the video to the PS3 or stream it.

you can stream video if its on your network. basically open windows media player 11, then click the arrow on library. then click media sharing. allow it. when any new device appeares on your network, it can stream media from your computer to it. just scan for media servers on your ps3.
put your music, pictures and video in any folder or folders you want. You just have to tell WMP which folder you want it to add to the library. Look at the option called Add To Library under File when you have WMP open.
Might be easier to show a video from youtube.

Hi Merete,

Thanks but I have checked all those vids out already, no joy.

Where I am bumping into problems is where the PS3 does not show up in the network (ie it does not show up as an unknown device so that I can allow sharing) this is about 1:04 into that YouTube vid.

you have to do is have them both running on the same network, in your case a router.
From Windows Media do a search for compatible devices and it should pick up your PS3 and then you should be good to go..
The two devices are connected to via LAN cable to router as below
Desktop:<< is this the right cable?
Ethernet cable?

I did find this from playstation
My NAT and PSN connection problems while the Media Server is enabled were solved by disabling UPnP in my router settings and placing my PS3 under DMZ.

Hi Merete,

I tried the above already and still no joy.

The PS3 and Desktop are both connected to the router with ethernet cable and can both get on the internet ok. The problem is when I go to Windows Media it does not find the PS3.

I tried putting the IP address of the PS3 in the DMZ but it still didn't work.

Windows will not connect to a PS3 as it is Linux based and Microsoft does not like to let their products inter act with other systems.
Even an Xbox 360 requires you to have Windows XP/Vista Media Center Edition and the Windows Media Extender program.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/mediacenter/extender/owner/mcxkit.mspx

Windows Media Center is not a seperate program that you can buy or download. You must have the special Media Center Edition XP or Vista other then the Starter or Business editions.
With Microsoft requiring all these special programs just to work with their own 360 there is no way they are going to let you connect Windows to a PS3.

To load music or other files onto your PS3 you need to use a flash drive or portable HD and can not just load them direct from a Windows PC through your home network.

I tried plugging my 500 gig external  HD into the USB port on PS3 but it wouldn't even detect it, I am guessing it is because it is in NTFS filesystem?
