The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Getting son started in graphics design

Tags: Graphics
My son (11) is interested in game development and graphics. I was wondering if anyone can provide me pointers on what to get my son working on to get him into this feild. Are there any easy getting started tools out there for game graghics and very intro programing for an 11 year to start a fun (not like homework or chore) dive into this world?
I want something he can get some enjoyment and satisfaction from while learning the processes.

Thanks,

Dif

hey Difladermaus,

what programming language are you going to use?

btw. i'd start with letting him have the experience of investigation himself, starting with asking this question here by himself .. the most important part in learning programming is learning where to get information and help. so maybe you can pass him this question and let him ask/answer himself here and you would be the moderator in background .. ;)

I really don't have a preference as long as it is something I can get hands on for a resonable price as far as programming. I am sure he would like to start on some simple 2d graphics as well.

I will have him look at and add to this over the weekend.

>> for a resonable price as far as programming

dont worry about the price, i'm sure we can find something for free .. there is a lot of free development tools ..

>> I really don't have a preference as long as it is something I can get hands on

do you or your son have any experience in any programming language? otherwise i would start to pick an easy language. maybe java or c# and start learning this language.

He's 11. He takes computer classes in school, but am pretty sure they have not covered any programming.

Any thoughts on the graphics end?

well lets see.. about 2d-graphics: each programming language/environment has its own toolkit for it, you can for instance let bitmaps/sprites move on the screen and stuff like that ..
most interesting/impressing, but not easy though is 3d-graphics .. then you need either opengl or directx ..
so what do you think 2D or 3D graphics?

here is a very nice tutorial-collection about opengl (3D-renderer) from the very beginning to very advanced technics:

look on the left side for opengl-tutorials

Hello Difladermaus,

my son (11 also) is currently using GameMaker :
http://www.yoyogames.com/gamemaker/

It is a good starting point to understand all the aspects : sprite/bitmaps, events, control logic, ...

Then when he would like to do real programming, he could move to VB/Java/C#/C++ and "real" 2D/3D API.

But with GameMaker, your son will have result without too much work. He could start by modifying existing examples.

Best regards.
