Using quaternions to implement ArcBall rotation

I read several articles, which offer to use quaternions in ArcBall implementation. Is it reasonable to use them when modern hardware can multiply matrices much faster?? Is you bid "yes, it's resonable" or "not, it's not", please, give some explanations.
