Hi!
Do you have any special game genre in mind? 'Cause if you don't, you might not want to buy such an expensive thing of a software. If you got some time and if you're willing to pay some effort, I'd rather recommend you a modern 3D Game like Unreal Tournament 2003 or Unreal 2 or anything that comes with an editor inside. The great advantage of these games is of course their 3D shooting nature, but you can build complex modifications that differ in a really great way from the original game. Plus, there's a huge (and I mean huge) support for these editors on the net, just look at planetunreal.com (the modding section will link you to almost everything you'll need). Of course, this could take a lot of work, but you could start with some simple things like changing the look or sound or whatever of the original game or build some simple levels and then, by gathering experience, you could really change big things, like whole models or animations (you can edit most of the models with 3D Studio Max, I think). This, together with some coding, will bring you a comlete new game in the end. By the way, it is really, really hard to build a good 3D game all alone. You will need some help, and the best help you can get will be found in the game modding scene I presume. These editors you and muzzi11 mentioned are maybe quite good and useful and would probably offer a good starting point, but these things are often missing some functions so that you cannot completely customize your game the way you want to. Another malus is the fact that many of these editors don't allow their users to publish the games developed with those commercially or they build in a logo of their developer. When creating a really special and really well done and also well playable modification, you could maybe be encountered by someone of a gaming firm, just look at Rewolf's Gunman Chronicles or, to name a really good example, Counter-Strike. Both started as a modification and became so popular in the end that Valve said, "Hm, you did a great job there, let's see, if we (and Sierra of course) could publish this as a seperate game." Gunman was not that successful, but as you may know, Counter-Strike was. That's enough (for the beginning ;-) )

I would recommend you to use Blitz3D (www.blitzbasic.com) or Dark Basic normal/profesional (www.darkbasic.com) for 3D game programming but you would have to learn basic then. if you want a drag and drop game maker then i would realy recommend you 3Drad(www.3drad.com) becouse you have much more options and you can make games of every genre and if your realy want to make your game special you can even program the brains of your enemies yourself.the 3D Gamemaker has a 'shooter' type engine that controls the logic of all games made with it. This 'shooter' engine is like the logic used in FPS games like Quake and Half Life. Essentially you choose your hero character and the bullet it shoot, then choose the enemies that attack you, the scene the game takes place in and the logic to how the game works (ie collecting power-ups or getting to the end of the level) so i would realy recommend 3Drad.
