Frustrated... 2d Gaming Please help!

Sorry this post got so long but please try to bear with it :) I just seem to have a little trouble wording what I am trying to say here... Im just looking for a few opinions thats all.

I am an intermediate vb programmer who's main experience with the language is gaming. I recently started learning C++ a bit and find it much harder and confusing than visual basic is. I love programming games... 2d games in particular and just am looking for advise in which direction I should go! I heard that C++ is much better geared towards gaming and a lot better to use. The problem is I can't even seem to figure out how to get on my way programming games in C++! Unlike VB which is so user friendly that I was able to pick the language up decently fast and start programming games using the free online source code I found, C++ has me totally stumped. I bought that "C++ in 21 days" book and am reading it through and everthing makes sense but now that I know the basic consepts of the language I don't have a clue how to implement that and start making games! The aspect I love about VB is that I can just create a game so fast on a form by placing pixtureboxes on the form and using BitBlt and control arrays etc... but it doesn't seem to have quite the power I am looking for. With C++ there aren't even forms and I don't have any idea what the heck to do! In this short VB to C++ tutorial thingy I found it takes like a TRILLION lines of code just to make a form! I don't even understand how the code works And from there it is still a pain in the butt. What I know in C++ right now takes me back to the BASIC programming language and I don't see how I can start making games out of a dos command prompt black screen! Anyway what I am looking for right now is just where the heck I should go! I am well willing to put forth the time and get the books and read the tutorials or whatever... But I would like the advise of where to start and step by step how to continue along the road of creating bigger and better 2d games. Right now I am just really lost and don't know where the heck to go with this! My goal is to be able to as easily and as efficiently as possible create good looking 2d games! I need a path to follow... What do I do after I finish this beginner "C++ in 21 days book"? and where should i go after that.... I am looking for the advise of 2d game creators who are happy with the games the are creatnig now and remember how they got to where they are. PLEASE HELP ME OUT IF YOU CAN!
