New programmer seeks advice on programming.

I plan to make a 2d skateboarding game for playing online.

I've never gone about this but I want to learn how to program.

I plan to use TCP/IP and IPX.

So where do I start?

I could do with msn contacts... sir_brock@hotmail.com

(Preferably freeware software needed, cheers.)

I know it sounds a bit out of my league - but I really wanna make this.  The likes of Tony Hawks are too high end for my PC.

Wow - excellent - you guys rock - I'm gonna add 10 points to make it 45 and then give ya 15 each.

I really appreciate you taking the time out to give me the advice and I'm actually doing ok with GameMaker.

I've so far managed to do the simple clown game with my own sounds.

I'm not such a novice with programming in some ways I guess... I know ASP quite well and HTML is easy.  I did small amounts of VB before and I programmed loads on spectrums/amigas/amstrads/commodores.

I can't believe my teach said 'print "Hello"' was going out of fashion when I use the same sort of thing with ASP in 'response.write'. Oh well.

I'm not up to scratch with many things otherwise - I know what C and C++ are and languages other than that, but my main objective AT THE MOMENT is to do a small online soccer app which is 2d for up to 8 players.

2 AI goalies will be included and if there are not 8 human players then AI will make up the teams.

It will be 5 a side soccer hopefully on a scrolling background but I'm struggling to get good movement with the players right now and making them 'animate' as such isn't something I'm able to do yet (I've got sprites for the movement but haven't been able to make them do it.)

The reason I want to do this is because I'm sure alot of low end spec PC users would like a game like this (IE me), and thats why the whole 2d skateboarding game came about.  Me and friends joked about it but now it might become a reality so thats majorly cool :)

I think the code used in GameMaker for online play is very nice and looks simple enough (just got to understand it first ;)).

Anyway - I'd like you guys to send me an email so I can contact you in future in reference to how I can do certain 'things' if you wouldn't mind.  My email is sir_brock@hotmail.com

Thanks for your help.

Oh crap - wait 3 days coz its gotta be a 20/20/20 split - sorry. :)
:) hehe, just added u at Msn messenger..
Btw, when i started game programming and stuff i used a prog from Sybex, "3D GameStudio" which was realy great. Its known as one of the best game creators with no programming experience, altough to get good results, you will need to use the C-Script editor (which uses the C language) but with eased out syntaxes and stuff :)

A german product.
one more day and there will be 60 :)
As promised you guys :)
i think you should learn c. everything is much easier then. use a gl like directx or opengl or maybe write your own.
i learned c in 5 days, and i'm writing my own gl now. i am really new in the world of programming, but i think
that with enough iq you can write program more easier that writing plain text. dont laugh. i am only 13 years old.
hmm...
