Pick your enterprise server version and download the appropriate guides.   If you got  a BB kit.....handhelds, BES server software, etc....there should be full documentation with it.

This is a pretty straight forward installation...especially with only a few users.  The most important thing is to read throught  the Pre-Installation chapter of the guide and complete the "Pre-installation Checklist"  step by step.....there are certain versions of software and.dlls you must have installed before you install BES.

Just as an example, here is the chapter on Pre-installation for version 3.6, Service Pack 4   Be sure to download the Guide for the appropriate version.

Chapter 2: Preinstallation
32 BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Microsoft Exchange 2000/2003
BlackBerry Enterprise Server Management on a Windows NT Server 4.0
The following software is required for BlackBerry Enterprise Server Management to function on a
Windows NT Server 4.0. These tools are built into Windows 2000/2003 Server. You only need to
install them if you are running Windows NT Server 4.0:
• Active Directory Service Interfaces (ADSI) 2.5: You can download this software from
http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/nts/downloads/other/ADSI25/default.asp
• Microsoft Management Console 1.2: You can download this software from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=39918&area=search&ord
inal=3
After you install Microsoft Management Console 1.2, you should complete an initial startup of
the installed software (type MMC at the command prompt) before you continue.
BlackBerry User Administration
The following software is required for BlackBerry User Administration to function:
• BlackBerry User Administration has the same system requirements, but it requires different
permissions from the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
• BlackBerry Enterprise Server and Microsoft Exchange are not required on the same computer as
BlackBerry User Administration.
Mobile Data Service
The following software is required for Mobile Data Service 1.1 to function:
• Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) 2.6 or later on the Mobile Data Service computer. ODBC is
installed with SQL Server (7.0 or 2000) or MSDE (1.0 or 2000). If you are not installing a database
tool (which is required for the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Management database), download
Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.6 or later from
http://www.microsoft.com/data/download.htm
• Mobile Data Service must be able to send HTTP requests through TCP/IP port 3101 so that
browsers on Mobile Data Service-enabled handhelds function properly.
Warning: Universal Serial Bus (USB) drivers are not supported in a Windows NT 4.0 Server environment.
Warning: To install BlackBerry User Administration, BlackBerry Enterprise Server Management must be
installed on the same computer.
Warning: If your network uses a proxy auto-configuration (PAC) file, you must have Windows 2000 Service Pack
3 installed.
Firewall configuration
Installation and Getting Started Guide 33
• Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 1.4: This software is provided on the BlackBerry Enterprise
Server CD in drive:\tools\. Launch j2re-1_4_1_02-windows-i586-i.exe and complete the
installation.
This version of JRE has Java Secure Socket Extension (JSSE) embedded
Remote attachment service
The following software is required for the attachment service on a remote computer to function:
• Windows NT® 4.0 Server (Service Pack 5 or later) or Windows 2000 Server (Service Pack 1 or
later) or Windows Server 2003
Firewall configuration
The BlackBerry Enterprise Server initiates outbound, bidirectional connections to the wireless
network. To support BlackBerry in an environment that has a firewall in place, you must configure
the firewall to enable the computers running the BlackBerry Enterprise Server within the company
to initiate TCP/IP connections to an outside server that is listening on port 3101. If you use a
proxying firewall, the proxy must be transparent.
Verify that your firewall is configured to accommodate these types of outbound-initiated
connections bidirectionally.
Note: A transparent proxy does NOT modify requests or responses through the proxy during proxy
authentication and identification, whereas a non-transparent proxy (where the client specifies the host name
and port number of the proxy) IS used to modify requests or responses through the proxy. If you have a
non-transparent proxy, the BlackBerry Enterprise Server can be configured to access an internal proxy address
which is then translated externally to the SRP Host on port 3101.
Note: Your corporate firewall must be able to resolve Internet addresses using the Domain Name System (DNS).
Chapter 2: Preinstallation
34 BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Microsoft Exchange 2000/2003
Required CDO.dll hotfix versions
For wireless synchronization to work, a CDO.dll hotfix is required to be installed and registered in
C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\BIN\ on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server computer (see steps
below).
The correct CDO.dll hotfix is based on your MAPI version on your mail server, as determined by the
Microsoft Exchange administration tool version on your BlackBerry Enterprise Server, and by the
Microsoft Outlook version running on your handheld user(s) desktop(s).
Determine the appropriate hotfix using this table.
1. Verify that you are logged in to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server computer as the Administrator.
2. If Microsoft Outlook is currently installed, remove it.

License keys
License keys enable the use of client licenses across your organization. For example, if you purchase
a license key for 20 users, you can have 20 users across your organization on the BlackBerry
Enterprise Server service(s) that you install with the license key. If you have multiple BlackBerry
Enterprise Server services installed, the user limit applies to the total number of users on all of those
BlackBerry Enterprise Server services.
To add more users after installation, you must purchase a new license key for the number of extra
client licenses that you need and use BlackBerry Enterprise Server Management to enter the new
license key, which adds that number to the total number of client licenses that are permitted across
your organization.

Evaluation version of the BlackBerry Enterprise
Server
If you have purchased an evaluation version of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, the installation and
administration of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server are the same as for a fully licensed version, with
the following exceptions.
• When the evaluation period expires, the SRP connection becomes unavailable.
• An evaluation version of the BlackBerry Enterprise Server uses a temporary SRP Identifier that
always begins with T.
• After installation, the BlackBerry Server Properties window indicates if the server is an
evaluation version:
Evaluation version of BlackBerry Enterprise Server—BlackBerry Server Properties window
The server name appears at the top of the General tab in the following format: Servername (status,
SRP status, version number installed Evaluation). This information is display only.
Note: The full version number of the evaluation BlackBerry Enterprise Server is the same as the full version
number of a permanent, fully-licensed BlackBerry Enterprise Server.

Defining a service account and mailbox
You must define a user service account and mailbox to be used by each of the following BlackBerry
Enterprise Server Software components that you install:
• BlackBerry Enterprise Server,
• BlackBerry Enterprise Server Management,
• and BlackBerry User Administration.
Complete the following procedure, using a Windows 2000/2003 account with Microsoft Exchange
2000/2003 service account and Windows 2000/2003 administrative privileges, to create a service
account and mailbox:
1. Log in to the Microsoft Exchange Server on which you intend to install the BlackBerry
Enterprise Server, as a user with Microsoft Exchange permissions.
2. From the Start menu select Programs> Microsoft Exchange> Active Directory Users and
Computers.
3. In the Tree view, expand the list, right-click the User folder, and select New User. The new user
will act as your BlackBerry Enterprise Server service account.
4. Type a new user login name (for example, BESAdmin). Click Next. The New Object - User
window appears.
5. Type a password for the user in the Password field and in the Confirm password field.
6. Select any of the password options available. Click Next. A second New Object - User window
appears.
7. By default, Create an Exchange mailbox should be selected and default values should appear in
the Alias, Server, and Mailbox Store fields. Change these values if necessary. Click Next. A
third New Object - User window appears.
8. The new user options that you selected are listed. Click Finish to create the new user and
mailbox.
Note: You do not need to install all the tools on the same computer. However, the same service account can be
used by two or more of the above components if they are installed on the same computer. The same mailbox
should be used by all components.
Warning: The administration service account cannot have a Terminal Services (roaming or mandatory) profile
or the BlackBerry Enterprise Server will not start and “Error 0x80090024 while initializing random number
generator” is logged. See the following Knowledge Base article on the Microsoft site:

9. To initialize the mailbox, send a test message to the service account mailbox.
Requirements for setting permissions on service
accounts
In this section, service account permissions are grouped according to the software component, as
follows:
• BlackBerry Enterprise Server service account
• BlackBerry Enterprise Server Management service account
• BlackBerry User Administration service account
Each component does not require a separate service account; the same service account can be used
for one or more of these software components. Refer to "Setting permissions" on page 47 for more
information and full instructions for assigning the permissions.
BlackBerry Enterprise Server service account
Your BlackBerry Enterprise Server service account requires the following Windows 2000/2003 and
Microsoft Exchange 2000/2003 permissions:

Setting permissions
Installation and Getting Started Guide 49
Assigning further Microsoft Exchange permissions to
service accounts
Before installing BlackBerry Enterprise Server and/or BlackBerry Enterprise Server Management
software, use Microsoft Exchange 2000/2003 System Manager to set the following service
account/mailbox permissions on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server administration service account
AND the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Management administration service account.
• Microsoft Exchange View Only Administrator: This permission should be set to enable (at
minimum) access at the Administrative Groups level in Microsoft Exchange 2000/2003 to be able
to read from the Active Directory. This permission should also be set on the BlackBerry User
Administration service account.
• Microsoft Exchange Administer Information store: This permission should be set at the
Mailbox store level or the Microsoft Exchange server level (to write information to the
administration service account mailbox).
To set View Only Administrator permissions on a service account:
1. Open Microsoft Exchange 2000/2003 System Manager.
2. Right-click an administrative group folder and select Delegate control. The Exchange
Administration Delegation Wizard appears.
3. Click Next. The Users and Groups screen appears.
4. Click Add. The Delegate Control dialog box appears.
5. Click Browse. The Select Users, Computers or Groups dialog box appears. Select the correct
service account from the list. Click OK.
6. On the Delegate Control dialog box, under Role, select Exchange View Only Administrator
from the drop-down list. Click OK.
7. Click Next. The final screen appears. Review the change that you are making.
8. Click Finish.
To set Administer Information store permissions:
1. Open Microsoft Exchange 2000/2003 System Manager.

3. Click the Security tab. On the Security tab, select the service account and allow (by selecting the
Allow check box) Administer Information store in the Permissions pane.
4. Assigned Send as and Receive as permissions to the service account. The BlackBerry User
Administration service account (which can be the same account that you use for the other tools)
requires the Receive as permission only.
5. Click OK.
Note: You can also use Microsoft Exchange 2000/2003 System Manager to set these permissions for any
Microsoft Exchange 5.5 servers, if you plan to install BlackBerry Enterprise Server Management in a mixed
environment.
Creating a MAPI profile
Installation and Getting Started Guide 51
Creating a MAPI profile
You must create a MAPI profile to be used by each of the service accounts that you created, which
might include a BlackBerry Enterprise Server service account, a BlackBerry Enterprise Server
Management service account, and a BlackBerry User Administration service account. (The same
service account can be used for all of these tools.)
You can create separate MAPI profiles for each tool, or you can use one MAPI profile for all tools.
The MAPI profile(s) can point to the same BlackBerry Enterprise Server administration mailbox.
To create the MAPI profile(s) during the installation of BlackBerry
Enterprise Server, BlackBerry Enterprise Server Management, and
BlackBerry User Administration
1. To verify that the MAPI subsystem is initialized, open Microsoft Exchange 2000/2003 System
Manager.
2. On the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Software CD, open the Tools folder.
3. From the command prompt run the fixmapisvc.exe utility and specify the mapisvc.inf file
as follows:
"fixmapisvc.exe c:\winnt\system32\mapisvc.inf".
A DOS screen appears briefly on the screen. The mapisvc.inf file is automatically installed
under C:/winnt/system32/.
Chapter 2: Preinstallation
52 BlackBerry Enterprise Server for Microsoft Exchange 2000/2003
Installing and registering CDO.dll
The CDO.dll that is supplied with Microsoft Outlook does not enable wireless calendar
synchronization. You must install both the correct CDO.dll hotfix and Microsoft Exchange
2000/2003 System Manager to have the correct CDO.dll and MAPI versions.
1. Verify that you are logged in to the BlackBerry Enterprise Server computer as the Administrator.
2. If Microsoft Outlook is currently installed, remove it.
3. Install the CDO.dll hotfix to C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\BIN\ or to the directory in which
the Microsoft Exchange administration tool is installed.
4. Manually register the CDO.dll hotfix using one of the following methods:
• At the command prompt (C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\BIN\ or the directory in which the
Microsoft Exchange administration tool is installed), type regsvr32 cdo.dll
• From the Start menu, click Run. In the Run dialog box, in the Open field, type regsvr32
cdo.dll
Installing database software
Installing database software
One of the following database tools must be installed if you want to host the BlackBerry Enterprise
Server Management database on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server: MSDE 2000 (on the CD), MSDE,
SQL 7.0, or SQL 2000. For database support on Windows Server 2003, you must upgrade to MSDE
2000 Service Pack 3.
If you do not have a copy of MSDE, SQL 7.0 or SQL 2000, you can use the copy of MSDE 2000 that is
included on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Software CD (see drive:\MSDE\SqlRun01.msi).
MSDE 2000 can also be installed directly from the Microsoft Office 2000 Developer CD-ROM.
1. On the computer on which you plan to install the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Management
database, go to drive:\MSDE\SqlRun01.msi on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Software CD.
2. Click SqlRun01.msi.
3. When the installation is complete, a dialog appears indicating that you must restart the system
in order for the configuration settings to take effect. Click Yes.
When the computer restarts, MSDE 2000 starts automatically. A Service Manager icon appears
in the system tray. The installation does not create a shortcut to the Service Manager.
4. Verify that the SQL Server service is running before you continue with the BlackBerry Enterprise
Server installation.
Note: MSDE 2000 Service Pack 3 is available on the Microsoft site through the following link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=90DCD52C-0488-4E46-AFBF-ACACE5369FA3&di
splaylang=en
Note: The following procedure is necessary only if you do not have SQL 7.0, SQL 2000, or MSDE installed and you
want to install MSDE 2000.
Note: The MSDE 2000 software files are installed to C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\.
Warning: You cannot run the MSDE 2000 installation file from a Terminal Server service.

Sorry, didn't mean to bury you with the Server stuff.......We were both posting at the same time.....now that you have clarified your situation:

No, you don't need the server software.

Just install the desktop manager on each user's desktop, choose desktop redirection during the setup and connect the handheld to the machine....even more straight forward than the BES.  Once you have the Desktop manager installed, there is a very good onboard help that will give you all the information you need to configure.

After you do that, come back here with any specific issues/questions and I'll be happy to help.

Yes, you need to leave the desktop machine running 24x7.

To secure it, rather than shutting down, just click ctrl/alt/del, then click "enter"....that will lock the machine locally and will require the user to log back in with a password.

I'd like to add my 2 cents.

Suresh - you don't need the desktop redirector. Instead, you can sign up into the blackberry web client (depending on your provider, like Cingular or AT&T). Once you have the web client configured, you can then configure your exchange server with a "Contact" for each person that has a blackberry. Then, you can modify the properties of your users in AD and turn on "Alternat eRecipient" and deliver mail to every user and to the user's blackberry contact in exchange. You still want to install the desktop software so you can synch your contacts, tasks, calendar items, and notes.

Now, you don't need the PC on all the time.

There are a few drawbacks to this method:
1) Emails that have been read or replied to from the blackberry will NOT be marked as being read NOR will a copy go into the user's sent items reflecting the sent message. (you can bcc yourself a message you need a record of to compensate)

2) with the enterprise server, you don't have over-the-air calendaring. Only desktop synching (but you would have this if you onle use the redirector anyway)

If you need step-by-steps for configuring your exchange for this methodology, let me know and I can give you more detail when I have time.

Avi

---If you are going to use the desktop management software anyway, what's the point of also using the webclient.  Leaving the desktop on 24x7 in not an issue.

"2) with the enterprise server, you don't have over-the-air calendaring"

Wrong.  One of the nice features of the BES is wireless calendar reconciliation.

by: Avi-SolomonPosted on 2005-03-17 at 07:51:45ID: 13566030

Avi,

if leaving the desktop on 24x7 is not an issue, then I agree with the first point, HOWEVER, the desktop management software is different than the Desktop Redirector. The DeskTop redirector, which redirects the mail is what requires the PC on 24x7. If you don't want to leave the machine on 24x7, then you shouldn't use the desktop redirector - in that case, you'd use the webclient so that you receive your email 24x7 without the the PC on 24x7

As far as point #2, It was early in the morning when I was typing. I MEANT to say that NOT HAVING the enterprise server means you don't get OAC (over the air calendaring). The desktop redirector and the webclient do NOT provide OAC, only the BES provides it. Sorry about the confusion. I meant to write "without", not "with"

by: JConchiePosted on 2005-03-17 at 08:13:51ID: 13566280

As I said:  if you are going to use the desktop management software, there is no reason not to use the desktop redirector.  The webclient is designed primarily for those who do not have an outlook/exchange server set up and are just pulling pop3 accounts into Outlook or Outlook express.  It is much more cumbersome.to setup and manage...  .especially when it comes to getting copies...without duplicates, of items sent from the handheld into the outlook sent items folder. Various providers have size limits on it and it less than fully featured.  It's a poor substitute for the desktop redirector.

by: Avi-SolomonPosted on 2005-03-17 at 09:06:28ID: 13566965

The reason not to use the desktop redirector has to do with leaving your machine on 24x7. Sometimes, that's not feasable. In my environment, a power outage that shuts off the PC for an entire weekend for my few people is not acceptable. Also, we used to use POP with outlook and we had desktops AND Citrix. users would access their mailbox either from their PC or Citrix but not both at the same time (as the PST file would be in use). The desktop redirector can cause an issue if it gets control of the PST file while another person is connected from Citrix and has Outlook open or tries to open it at a time the redirector is accessing it.
