Question

Redirector messages going to Junk Folder

Asked by: akaSurreal

I use BlackBerry Desktop Redirector and it is working, but heres my problem.

Redirector & Blackberry network sends messages through exchange to communicate from addresses like "network@etp1102.etp.na.blackberry.net" with subjec lines like "RIM_bca28a80-e9c0-11d1-87fe-00600811c6a2".  The problem is that my Exchange server is marking them as junk mail.  So the redirector never gets its messages, which means it thinks its messages are always pending, because it never gets the confirmation messages going to the junk folder.  I have found if I keep marking each message as "not junk" it works, but so far I have had to unblock about 15 domains because the emails are like:

network@etp1102.etp.na.blackberry.net
network@etp1103.etp.na.blackberry.net
network@etp1104.etp.na.blackberry.net

If there was a way to allow a mask like @*.blackberry.net then it would work, but I see no way to do this, so I have to keep manually unblock each domain.  The problem is explaining this to some employees is not so easy.  Is there a simple fix for this problem or am I doing something wrong on my exchange server for these to be marked as Junk to begin with?  I am running Small Business Server 2003 and have latest SP2 on Exchange.

And, no I am not running BES because I do not want to shell out the cash right now when the Desktop Redirector does what I need for the moment.

Thanks for your help.

Go into the junk email options and add *.*.*.blackberry.net

by: akaSurrealPosted on 2006-09-12 at 23:42:55ID: 17509514

Just tried that, does not work.  Still all going to junk folder.  Why are they going to junk folder to begin with?  Did Microsoft purposely add stuff to screw up BlackBerry's efforts?

by: garycutriPosted on 2006-09-13 at 00:39:34ID: 17509784

Are you just using the junk email filter in Outlook? If so ensure that no blackberry sites are listed in the blocked sites.  Also add *.etp.na.blackberry.net as multiple wildcards may not be accepted in the safe list.

I am using the "Safe Senders" tab of "Junk E-Mail Options" window in Outlook 2003.  That new mask did not work either.  I really don't think wildcards work period or my first one would have worked.

I must not be the only one having this problem with the Redirector messages and Outlook?  Surprised I haven't seen any fix info out there.

Is your Spam filter settings set to "Low"?

by: garycutriPosted on 2006-09-13 at 02:06:30ID: 17510124

Also do you have another spam filter running locally or on the network? e.g MailMarshal?

As a test turn off your local spam filter and see if the email are still moved to the spam folder.

by: akaSurrealPosted on 2006-09-13 at 10:52:55ID: 17514086

Well I am sure that would work, but other than these blackberry messages it works very well for catching the spam.  No I am not running anything extra, and my spam settings are set to default which appears to be high.  I don't recall ever changing this.

Also, I am hoping for a solution that won't require a bunch of manual changes on each employee's computer.

by: akaSurrealPosted on 2006-09-13 at 14:41:36ID: 17516008

Update, setting to "Low" does fix the problem, and is default on the other machines.  Not sure why mine is high.  But is there any way to keep "high" and still allow the redirector messages through?

by: garycutriPosted on 2006-09-18 at 02:34:36ID: 17541859

Not really, leave your setting on low and add your common spam emails to the blocked senders list.  Use @domain.com etc to block them as the username always changes.

by: akaSurrealPosted on 2006-09-18 at 02:56:52ID: 17541950

Yeah thanks, that isn't much of a solution in my opinion, but seeing as noone else is bothering to help out, I will give you partial points for a "band-aid" until I can figure out something more permanent.

I am having the same problem as the author, but when I change the spam settings to low the blackberry redirector emails still go into junkmail.  The emails are getting flagged as junk mail before they get to the desktops.
