Question

How to configure Blackberry

Asked by: markfurey

We recently moved away form 2003 SBS, an so had to rebuild a new AD from scratch. The new Exchange 2003 is working fine, but we cant get Blackberry to work. We have reloaded the Blackberry server and added the users and license keys, but the handsets wont activate, and just time out. We have wiped one handset to factory defaults, but still it does'nt connect to the BB server.

We have followed an installation guide from Blackberry's Web site.

Any ideas please?

Note, The users still have the same Email address, but they connect to a different/new AD domain.

You would have to reprovision the Blackberry devices.  This means that the server would have to issue a new secure key and the device would have to receive it.  What version of BB Server are you using?

Are you sure your Blackberry server has access to the internet?

Some small points of attention (I forgot them once so...):
send as rights (pay attention with domain admins!)
open port on firewall (3101)
does your besadmin has the proper rights on the exchange (Exchange View Only Administrator)

Are there any unusual events in the eventlog of the BES?

We are using BB Enterprise Server for MS Exchange, and its version 4.1, how exactly do you reprovision the BB devices?

The server does have access to the internet with the relevant port opened up on the firewall. And it passes the BB router connection.

The BESAdmin user account has all the permissions to the local computer and exchange system, as detailed in Blackberry documentation downloaded from the BB web site.

In short it all looks fine, but I'm sure we are missing something.

So you deleted the users from the old BES and created them on the new?
Or is it the same machine that is added in the new domain?

by: markfureyPosted on 2008-01-23 at 02:25:09ID: 20722185

Its a new Server with the original users re-added to the new BB manager, with the original Lic keys transfered.

Ok, new server (also new DB I assume)

So here's a guide to troubleshoot enterprise activations:
http://www.blackberryforums.com.au/forums/general-bes-discussion/300-identifying-troubleshooting-enterprise-activation-issues.html

The devices were already activated on the old BES.. Before trying to activate a device, always wipe the BB.

Can you try to activate a device via the desktop manager? (hooked up to a PC)  maybe this can provide us some extra info.

To sort this issue out quickly can you please do the following?

1. Wipe the Blackberry device (Options > Security Options > General > Press menu or track wheel and select "Wipe Handheld")
2. Connect the BlackBerry to the BES server via USB
3. In BlackBerry Manager right mouse click on the device owners name and select "Assign Device"
4. From the list that appears select the device that is show and select OK
5. If you installed the BES correctly the device should start to activate (note: if you refresh the BB Manager you should also see the PIN beside the user)

I am assuming an error may appear saying the "The user in not yet know..." etc which indicates the Exchange permissions aren't set correctly.  This is 100% confirmed if the error also has (16) at the end.  If the device starts to activate correctly via cable you wireless activation may be failing due to the following:

1. Spam Filter is block the activation email (ETP message)
2. The user's Outlook is filing the activation email in the Junk Email Folder
3. The user has Outlook open and it is transferring the email (including the activation email) from Online to an Offline PST folder.

Thankyou for all your input, the issue has now been resolved, I think as many of you suggested it was a permissions problem. We finaly resolved it by starting the services as the Administrator account, even though we had given BESAdmin all the pemissions in accordance with Blackberry's PDF?
