Question

Restore addresses.dat file to Tungsten E

Asked by: RobinCham

Trying to restore old contact data to Tungsten E after hard reset.  Located 'old' addresses.dat file that contains contacts I want (now named 'addresses.dat.001').  Cannot hotsync this file from PC to handheld.  Tried deleting a much smaller (1kb) addresses.dat file on PC, renaming 'old' addresses.dat.001 file to addresses.dat and hotsyncing - no luck.  Ideas welcome.

right, the dat file cannot be hotsync'd---the palm generally only understands PRC and PDB files.

i suspect, though, that the dat file was originally created by the PC application (palm desktop).  so what you probably need to do is this:

1) put that file into your user's address directory within palm desktop (typically C:\program files\palmOne\[user name]\address)
2) run palm desktop -> the contents of the dat file should be visible under "contacts"
3) run a hotsync -> the data will be transferred to your palm

any luck?

Tried replacing .dat file in address folder of palm desktop with 'old' .dat file with data info and resynching.  No go.  Also, couldn't see any contacts in palm desktop after replacing .dat file.  Palm desktop lists' addresses.dat.001', 'addresses.dat' and addresses.bak' in addresses folder.  '.dat.001' has old contact info in it, I assume, because it's a much larger file.  Other ideas welcome.

More info:  I uninstalled old palm desktop, reinstalled it, and set 'new' user as Robin, same as old user in uninstalled plam desktop.  I'm working with that new user in all operations.

what do you mean with this:

>Palm desktop lists' addresses.dat.001'

-> if 'addresses.dat.001' is the file with the "good" information, it should first be renamed 'address.dat' (maybe you need to rename the original file first into something along the lines of 'old_...'), and then, palm desktop should be started.

bluelizard:

You're right, the 'addresses.dat.001' contains the data I need.  I've tried renaming it 'addresses.dat' after renaming original 'addresses.dat' to 'addesses.old', but no info comes up in palm desktop and nada gets transferred during hotsync.  Other ideas welcome.

personally and in this case, this is fine with me. however, i still have some comments on this:

lately, i've seen it happen more and more that question posters eventually solve the problem themselves or are not satisfied with the answers they got from EE and therefore request to get their points refunded.  generally, i don't object to refunding the points, BUT if this is granted more and more, an unwanted signal is given to the question posters, namely, "if you solve the problem yourself or if your don't like the suggestions that EE experts give you, you don't have to 'pay' the points."  this, of course, leads to a behavior that's not very beneficial for the experts: since the question posters know that they can always get a refund if the problem "has solved itself" or has become irrelevant in the meantime, they have no motivation to think carefully about whether to ask a question or not, how many points to assign etc., instead, they can simply "dump" every little problem into EE and see what the experts have to say about it.  If it turns out that the experts' advice wasn't necessary after all, they get their points back and don't lose anything, but, the experts have still invested time in answering the question --- in vain.

if EE tolerates this behavior, this will ultimately drive experts away, because they see their efforts increase while at the same time their chances for points are decreasing.

hence, my personal opinion is that refunding points should really be meant for exceptional situations only, for instance when all the comments read "I have no idea", or merely "check this and that", but when obviously the experts have not invested more than a neglectable amount of time. if an expert has indeed spent time helping the questioner, but the problem remains unsolved, a low grade should be applied to reflect that, not a refund of the points.

bluelizard:

Couldn't agree more with your 'point refund' argument.  However, I note you say 'in this case, this is fine with me.'  If I had received a series of helpful suggestions based on the details noted in the original question, I would gratefully award points.  I haven't solved the original problem and haven't received useful responses, so I'm asking to remove the question from the board so other experts can continue to help othes in this area without the burden of this particular question.

yes, it's really fine with me to refund the points; my remark relates not so much to points for me, but more to EE philosophy... my personal opinion is that EE doesn't guarantee that a problem will be solved, especially since no one has a chance to look at the problem in sufficient detail and then issue a "quote" for its solution. instead, in EE, experts simply go to work when you raise a question, and---again, this is my personal opinion---in the end, the points are meant not so much for *solving* the problem but for *investing time* in helping the questioner. so, if it turns out that the problem still cannot be solved for whatever reason, the questioner should still honor the time that the expert spent by rewarding points; to judge the quality of the answer, you can always use different grades (but you should keep in mind that it's not the expert's fault if a specific solution doesn't work because of any unusual conditions on your PC etc.).

but, anyway, it's o.k. for me to refund the points and delete the question (i guess you have to ask community support for that, though, and cannot just post a comment addressing the page editor).

bluelizard:

You're dead-on with the distinction between 'solving' and 'investing time' re questions.

I was surprised no one had more suggestions to my question - it seems my problem might be common with Palm PDA's, but if there's no suggestions or answers, so be it.

I'll award you the points in any case - our discussion re points and solutions was worthy of awards.  This should satisfy the EE community, may help you, and keeps my conscience clear.
