The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Timeout with system.net.webrequest
Tags: timeout, compact, framework
Hi All, I have an application that I am building to run on a Pocket PC (Compact .net Framework), the application is designed to make a web request (using system.net.webrequest class) and request and XML document which is then read into a dataset. Kind of a simple way to transferring a dataset from server to pocket PC I Guess.

I had been scratching my head for hours wondering why I keep getting timeout errors, and finally got to the boottom of it. It seems that if I strategically insert a pause then everything works fine. The code I am using is below and you can see that I have put a Messagebox statement in to create this pause in execution. Without the messagebox statement the code files with a Timeout Error on GetRequestStream Line.

On a different note it only sems to fail if the generic handler on the webserver does a "Request.Form" call (Which is important), if I remove any context.request.form calls then the page executes fine without the delay. It is important that the device passes form fields as part of the request which is why I have hte content tyep set to "application/x-www-form-urlencoded".

Any Idea's, is there a better way to do this? I'd really like to avoide putting in extra delays as these devices are slow enough!

myhttpWebRequest = System.Net.WebRequest.Create(DestinationURL)
        If blnUseSecurity Then
            myhttpWebRequest.Credentials = New System.Net.NetworkCredential(strUsername, strPassword)
        End If
        myhttpWebRequest.PreAuthenticate = True
        myhttpWebRequest.UserAgent = "SOL-1 JasJam"
        myhttpWebRequest.Method = "POST"
        myhttpWebRequest.ContentType = "application/x-www-form-urlencoded"
        myhttpWebRequest.AllowWriteStreamBuffering = True
        If blnUseProxy Then
            Dim NetProxy As New Net.WebProxy(strProxyURL, intProxyPort)
            myhttpWebRequest.Proxy = NetProxy
        End If

        Dim strURLFormData As String = FormData
        Dim myBuff() As Byte = ASCII.GetBytes(strURLFormData.ToCharArray)
        myhttpWebRequest.ContentLength = strURLFormData.Length
        MessageBox.Show("Insert Pause Here!")
        Dim newStream As Stream = myhttpWebRequest.GetRequestStream()
        newStream.Write(myBuff, 0, myBuff.Length)
        newStream.Close()

You can either:

1) specify myhttpWebRequest.Timeout
2) put a Sleep() beforethe GetRequestStream()
3) do one or more retries when a timeout exception is raised.

I have tried specifying various timeout vaulkes right up to 30 seconds and this does not help the problem at all.

I was unaware that I can put a sleep command in if this is not being done in a seperate thread?

I'l look into the retry side and get back to you.

Turns out that I wants closing any response streams, and we all know that webservers a reluctant to serv too many requests from the same client...

I addded a few lines here and there that properly closed the Streams and its working fine!
