Question

eVB Runtime Files for Windows Mobile 5.0 (WM5)

Asked by: robbaranowski

I know that Windows Mobile 5.0 no longer supports eVB and that there are no runtime files that really exist for eVB apps.  But, I have a single instance where I need to demo an older eVB app on a customized WM5 PDA with an ARM processor.

I have downloaded the runtime files for PPC 2003 from http://msdn.microsoft.com/mobility/windowsmobile/downloads/evb.aspx ... when I install this on my WM5 machine, I get an error that it is not compatible with the current OS...but I can continue, but my test application will not run.  Upon running the eVB app, I get an error "Cannot find extension file Forms Data. Please run setup to restore this file."  PVBForm2.dll and other necessary files were successfully installed into the Windows directory.

The application that I am testing with now is very simple - basically a form with a "Hello World" label.  I figure if I can get this application to run, I can later try to get the real application going.

I know this is combination is not supported, but I've seen references on the Internet as well as on this site that folks have been able to run eVB applications on WM5...just looking for a little help as to how.

Thanks.

2 things.
1) I think they are embedded where you can run older app on the Mobile 5 platform. Try it.
2) you can download an emulator  http://www.microsoft.com/Downloads/details.aspx?familyid=57265402-47A8-4CE4-9AA7-5FE85B95DE72&displaylang=en

Thanks.
1) I have been trying this with the described "Hello World" app.  There is absolutely no support for the older apps on the Mobile 5 platform, but there is the unsupported runtimes for PPC 2003 that could work but do not.
2) I know that my apps can run older emulators, but instead of the one that you suggested, I will download and try the WM6 emulator...but this still doesn't get me closer to my goal of running on the hardware, but might provide additional information.

Thanks.

.NET is not an option for this single-instance requirement...once this application runs on the hardware, the project will be complete and handed to a customer.  But the link to the thread that you sent is interesting, in that usamick2003 claims to be able to do what I am trying to do - it is the sequence that he had success with that I am trying to get detail on and trying to replicate.

Thanks.

For those that are searching and have run across this discussion, the stock solution of downloading the evb runtimes should work on WM5.  I believe WM6 adds the feature of automatically trying to download the runtimes when it sees an evb application.  The issue that I had was a problem with one of the dll's in the OS that was incorrect.  Because it was a custom OS for custom hardware, I believe the issue only applies to this single instance, so publishing further details will probably not help anyone at this point.

The solution should have worked for a stock OS, so I should accept it.  The evb runtime download is really the ticket - no need to switch to .NET for any one-time applications!
