The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Blackberry Sync Questions and other BB problems.
I have been a avid Windows Mobile 6 user for a long time, although WM6 is not perfect it did the job but was slow and prone to errors.

I decided yesterday to shift to blackberry, reading all the rave reviews i thought it should be exactly what i need.

Firstly, I am a single user, and use Outlook 2003 at work, without exchange or without the blackberry Enterprise Server

The sales man told me that I dont need the enterprise server and can either use blackberry internet service provided by my carrier or use the redirector.

Setting up the BB was easy using the internet service which was provided by the carrier, I have 3 email accounts and all the  emails started to come through and all seem well.  Then I thought about my sent items.  When I send an email from my BB they dont show up on my sent box in outlook.. Also any emails that i read on my BB, dont show up as read on my desktop,  i guess this is becuase there is no syncing involved anywhere.

Time to try the blackberry desktop redirector.   It seems to be sending chunks of emailing message to my blackberry with  the message " This message is used to carry data between the blackberry handheld and an associated server.." yada yada yada... -- what is it actually doing?

I have got about 20 of these message, but don't see any changes... i haven't deleted them, but i haven't seen much difference between the internet servie.

The only difference I see is when using the redirector :
- Only one email for one email address is comming through, the black berry server seems to have stop working for my other email addresss.  Is this becuase the redirect only works with the outlook profile and doesn't understand or care about the number of email accounts you have within that profile?
- When I send an email form the bb it shows up in my desktop outlook INBOX as oppose to the outbox
(which is not exactly perfect, but i can set a rule so that it moves to the sent items folder)

The problem with the redirector is that is uses the outlook profile, so even if the outlook profile has 5 email accounts, all messages are sent to the blackberry under one email account.  Which is a big problem.

So what  is my solution?

I am also unhappy as to how the blackberry stores the messages, it doesn't have a sent box for email!  thats just nuts... if ur sending 40 messages a day on your blackberry and all of them are being stored in the main "inbox" folder, its so chaotic.  Agreed that the icon is different from incomming and sent messaging, but a different folder for each would be much better.  Just like how its done on WM6

After all this i now find out that i could have got the same service on my WM device using Blackberry Connect..

Please guys, let me know if im totoally wrong on the blackberry, or if their are other solutions to solving the above problems in my scenario.

Thanks.

The way blackberry handles mailboxes is a bit of a pain.  It will show an account for each box on your BB, but it will also lump them all together under messages.  No way around it.  No idea why.

The trick is to use imap if at all possible, both on the BB and in outlook.  This will keep everything synced up - including if you've read the message or not.  If you just use POP there isn't any way to keep track of this - this is the design of the protocol, not a problem with the BB.

The sent messages can be hidden from the messages view.  You can change this under mailbox->options -> general options->hide sent messages.  When using imap you should then be able to see sent items by choosing view folder and picking sent items from inside the mailbox.

I would really suggest turning off the desktop sync of email.  It is really only useful if you have a BB that doesn't have internet access (the old ones didn't, so you'd write emails and they would send when you did a sync).  On a modern BB with a data connection you want to use imap and have everything kept in sync that way, and just use the desktop program to sync the calendar, pictures, etc.

I assume you have a pearl or curve... hopefully.  Some of the older ones didn't have as many options.  Unfortunately the BB excels at corporate email, and does OK with one imap email, but when you start having many email address it can get annoying.... mostly because it groups them all under message... still can't figure out why.

Hope that helps, let me know if not.

Hi.
I did make some progress.

We will talk about IMAP a bit later.

I did figure out a way to get my sent items sync with outlook without using imap

Using the BIS Internet Service, their is a option to Auto Bcc all sent items from blackberry devices.
So I set up a new email address called bbsent@xxx.com  Then i set up outlook on my desktop to check this email every now and then.  And then set up a rule that delivers this mail directly to the sent box and mark as read.

So now all the emails I send from my blackberry is now also sent to the sent box (although cheating a little bit, it works very well)

I also figured out how to seperate the sms/mms in to another folder, in the email options on the blackberry their is a option to "seperate" sms, so once i did that i felt a bit better.

I agree, I dont know why their is a icon called "Messages" -- It keeps a duplicate copy of all mail from all blackberry accounts.. Vey strange..   Makes no sense. perhaps some users want to see all their mail in one box.. a bit chaotic if you have more than 2 accounts..  What I did is remove the icon by hiding it...

Another annoying thing is that there is no "Sent Box" folder on the bb.   We takled about this, and i dont want to hide the sent items, as i may want to refer to what i sent, but why does it store the sent mail in the same folder as incomming mail??? thats just so not like windows.

I am sure an experienced or technical blackberry person should know the answer?

Using IMAP (never used it before) it syncs the inbox and sent items?  what about other folders on my outlook?  have to check with my isp if they have imap server for downloading mail.

So I am somewhat happy, but one would ask what is the difference between a blackberry and a WM6 device from HTC or a powerfull nokia running WM6?  More service, more third party apps etc.. You can now have Push Email using exchange or get blackberry connect and bob's your uncle.

tks.
