the only thing to really keep in mind that "new" will call constructors (and "delete" - destructors), while LocalAlloc() etc [Win32 API] and malloc() [a function from C runtime library] do not.

new, delete is enough in the most cases.
LocalAlloc, VirtualAlloc - whenever you for sure know what you are doing.
