Question

How to Connect Symbol MC35 Device to the Zebra QL420 Printer via Bluetooth.

Asked by: ajsri77

I have a Symbol MC35 Pocket PC, which i need to connect with Zebra QL 420 Printer via bluetooth to Print barcodes.

I'm very new to blue tooth technology. And i don't know how to create a Blue tooth Virtual COM Port in Symbol Pocket PC.

I also wanted to know how to create the bar code from .NET Compact Framework 2.0. I'm using VB.NET as language for development.

Any help or suggestion will be highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

To create a bar code from the .NET Compact Framework, try:
1.
Windows Mobile Barcode DLL for Compact Framework

or
2.
TrueType Barcode Fonts:

Symbol's support should be able to help you with connectivity,

Virtual COM ports are created by the bluetooth manager on windows mobile. They are created when you pair to a device. You receive one incoming and one outgoing port.

Look for an outgoing COM port to the paired device. Then you access this the same way you would a regular serial port.

I'm unable to pair the device with the Symbol MC35. Because when i pair it, it is creating a passkey and asking to enter it in the device. As, there is no provision to enter any passkey in the zebra printer, the pair is not getting created.

Which way are you pairing? It sounds like you are doing the printer to the device.

No, i'm trying to pair from Symbol MC35 to Zebra Printer only.

then shouldn't you be able to enter in a PIN when you try to connect to the printer. Most hardware comes with a preset PIN so the printer will have a default pin.

Thanks,,

one part of my question is answered. the printer has a default PIN and when i pair with this PIN, it is connected and a virtual com port is created successfully..

Now, how can i print the barcode from my .NET CF 2.0 application.?

THis is a tricky part that I am not entirely sure on. You need to send commands to the printer in a language it understands. If the printer interprets PCL then you need to find the definition for PCL and encode data in this to send to the printer.

I will do some research tomorrow and post back.

Yes. i understand the Printer QL420's language is CPCL and i'm also trying get some document related to this language from zebra..

Now the answer depends on what type of bluetooth connection is established with the printer. If its an actual bluetooth connection with a Printer service then there is no need to use PCL, you would need to use the Basic Printing Profile with bluetooth. Now this is also bluetooth stack dependant. I think the symbol devices would be WIDComm which does support this profile.

Now to actually using the profile is another story. The best bet would be using a .net wrapper for the bluetooth communication. I am currently developing wrappers but they are not yet complete. http://www.dotnetcore.com/section/bluetooth/default.aspx.

I have used Franson Bluetools in the past and they are quite decent but cost $99 USD. I would check to see if they support the bluetooth profile.

If it isn't a bluetooth service connection but just a straight serial connection then PCL is the way to go. You can do this by just creating a connection to the device and treating it as a normal serial port.

If the device is already paired then the IO namespace should be sufficient in establishing a connection then use PCL to communicate. I dont know how to create the barcodes, maybe use IDAutomation for that or maybe you already have them. But once you have them I think they are just sent to the printer as an image file (which is just binary transfer) the PCL will give you the definition
