The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Problem trying to compact SQL 2005 CE database

Tags: Microsoft, SQL 2005 compact edition
This is running on a portable device using CE 5.0 and compact framework 2.0.  The goal is for the user to be able to run a process that compacts the database.  Here is the code:

        Dim Source As String = "\My Documents\Data.SDF"
        Dim Destination As String = "\Application\Data.CPT"
        Dim sqlEngine As SqlCeEngine

        Try
            If File.Exists(Source) Then
                sqlEngine = New SqlCeEngine("Data Source=" & Source)
                sqlEngine.Compact("Data Source=" & Destination)
                File.Delete(Source)
                File.Move(Destination, Source)
            End If

        Catch sqlex As SqlCeException
            Dim sqlerror As SqlCeError
            For Each sqlerror In sqlex.Errors
                MessageBox.Show(sqlerror.Message)
            Next

        Catch ex As Exception
            MessageBox.Show(ex.Message)

        Finally
            sqlEngine.Dispose()
        End Try

When I run it through the debugger, the yellow line gets to the line that says "sqlEngine = New...", and then goes to the next line "sqlEngine.Compact...", and then it drops down to the "Catch sqlex..." area, but never shows an error.  I have a messagebox.show a couple of lines down, intended to show any sql errors, but I just get a blank message box.

One other thing that looks strange to me...near the end of this code, on the line that says "sqlEngine.Dispose()", I have a warning that says "Variable sqlEngine is used before it has been assigned a value".  I don't understand that at all, since it's been defined above.  I am not getting any other warnings or syntax errors in this code.

Is there an obvious problem with my code, or at least a way to see what error I'm getting?  TIA
