The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

InstallShield setup problem - ALLUSERS.

Tags: installshield, allusers
Hello,

I have a setup made with InstallShield that work fine. However it has to be installed for all the users of the machine, then I used the dialog option which ask if the install is for the current user or for all, that also work well regarding the creation of icons for all users.

I have two applications:

1. This first application is for updating some of the application tables. It work well always, it was created also with the "allusers" option and work fine for administrators and non administrators.

2. The second application is a client application. This application uses several proprietary ActiveXs (.ocx) and works well when installed for each user separatelly. However when installed for all users it works well only for the administrators but for the mortals the application tries to run the setup (.msi file) each time the client is launched. I guess that it is something with the ActiveX because:

a) the problem appears when the application tries to use the first window with the activex.

b) when uninstalling the application, the only files that remain in the application folder are the ocx files.

Could someone provide a specific solution or a good clue without sending me to check the chapter on COM registration of InstallShield (I did it already) but can“t find a simple solution as that documentation is for almost genius, I think. Also, the solutions in the installShield web site are all extracts of the programs help (the same donkey - this is a local expression in my Country).

Kind regards.

Uninstall:

In my experience, Installshield struggles to remove files that are in use, so ensure that the activex files aren't running.

Ensure in Installshield that the files are not marked as Permanent

Install:

The registration of ActiveX is something I have recently been driven mad by.

I have recently had to write an installer that can install and register DLLs as Non Admin users.

When a component is registered using Installshield's COM Extract At Build option, it extracts registry data automatically, and then writes it to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. This is only writeable by Admin users.

I found i had to use RegSpy (http://www.installsite.org/pages/en/tt_analyze.htm) to extract the registry data manually, edit it to be HKEY_CURRENT_USER and import it into installshield. This means each DLL is registered under that user only. You also have to ensure the DLLs are written to the App Data folder.

However if you are admin installing for all users, it SHOULD be ok.

There is an alternative to registering dll/ocx files on Windows XP or later: RegFree COM
