ASP.Net 2.0 Ajax Extensions Setup ends prematurely

I have Vista, reinstalled VS 2008 a 2nd and 3rd time and have tried to install the ASP.Net 2.0 Ajax Extensions. Each time  I try to install the Ajax extentions it appears as though the installation is about to complete - but then in the last moment the roleback takes place and I get the message ... ended prematurel because of an error.  ... Rund Setup Wizard again.
I need these Extensions for the Telerik tools I use.  
What can I do?

The file name is ASPAJAXExtSetup

The complete error message is

Microsoft ASP.Net 2.0 AJAX Extentions 1.0 1.0 Setup Wizard ended prematurely

Microsoft ASP.Net 2.0 AJAX Extentions 1.0 1.0 Setup Wizard ended prematurely because of an error. Your system has not been modified. To install this program at a later time, run the Setup Wizard again.

Click the Finish button to exit the Setup Wizard

try reinstalling .NET Framwork 2.0/3.5...

Okay, I first deinstalled .NET Framework 3.5, restarted the system new, downloaded 3.5 Framework.

But always, when I try to install ASP.Net 2.0 Ajax Extensions I get the obnocticous error message  telling me do install at a later time...  (talking about absoulte MS stupitdity) when I try it later its more of the same.

Managed to set everything up on an old xp-system and it worked. However its not a laptop, slow and I can't take it with me.

Does MS possible give a list where the problem lies?  All I get is a rollback and that's it - no further info!

i can understand your pain.

however, as the extension can be installed successfully on other computers, so let's assume it is a machine (or environment) specific problem.

so please carefully determine the differences between the two computers. of course, i don't mean the performance or the hardware models. i mean the installed .NET components and the installation orders, as well the other installed programs.

I discovered other areas on the system that were giving me trouble. After spending much time trying to track it down decided to setup the system anew. Its working now. bbao thank you for concern and I guess you get the points.
