Question

Event ID:1013 MsiInstaller

Asked by: snyderkv

I googled and looked and subscribed to EventID.net for one year.

Still no good solutions for this error.

Some poeple get this when trying to install SCR331x CAC Card Reader Software

It lists the software in Add/Remove probrams. I can install the drivers manually but the software is just not there. When I try and run the Setup.exe for it it gives me this error in Event Viewer. The actuall error when running it says something like Did not detect MSIInstaller on your system blah. However, I see MsiInstallerEngineMSI in AddRemove Programs and can install other .exe's fine.

Can someone show me how to find out exactly what is missing and how to fix it?

Unfortunately the official explanation for the Event ID you are seeing is  " {Unhandled exception report} Error message for an unhandled exception, this is the report." What version of Windows Installer are you using? (start > run >msiexec /? [enter])

Can you run setup.exe with a /? to see if there are any switches that you can pass to Windows Installer? What I am trying to see is if we can pass a /l*c:\logfile.log switch so that the log file may provide us with more information as to what the MSI is failing on.

Crap I can't get it to work. It's a little confusing. I do get a lot of switch options. But do I run msiexec /f "path to setup.exe" ???

by: snyderkvPosted on 2007-01-17 at 12:10:14ID: 18335479

I did this, after putting the product.msi in my cmd prompt path
msiexec /l*c:\logfile.logg setup.exe

It just keeps poping up with msiexec switch options. I will continue to try it

Ok here is an important piece of the pie. This is the actual GUI Error I get

Ok the executables are all good and valid. They work on other poeples machines.

The isscript engine is installed and working on the bad machine. I reinstalled it to make sure.

I don't know why the local machine is requesting payflex.req.0901cf9b_b481_4de4_b81d ??? I cannot find this on my computer either. Why is the machine requesting it?

by: connectechPosted on 2007-01-17 at 23:00:56ID: 18338697

Firstly, the file is just called payflex.req and should exist on a working machine in C:\Program Files\SCM Microsystems\SCR 331\PCSC Tools\TestResMan\ (The {xxx} part behind the name is probably a component GUID that is appended to the filename by the error message)

When your installation is running it is extracting files to this directory:
C:\DOCUME~1\KLIFTI~1.SNY\LOCALS~1\Temp\{8F2F7781-CD58-4A60-A90A-5E8DE796624C}

In that directory there should be a file called 'TESTRE~1.cab'

The installation is trying to install payflex.req from TESTR~1.cab to C:\Program Files\SCM Microsystems\SCR 331\PCSC Tools\TestResMan\payflex.req but there is an error reading from either that directory, that file or that disk.

I would check add/remove programs to make sure that the program is not listed as installed. If it is uninstall it first. I would also download a utility from MS called MSICUU2.exe (you can google it) MSI Cleanup Utility - you install on the pc and then run it (from the start menu shortcut called Windows Install Clean Up) and it will give you a list of installed MSIs. Check that the SCR331x CAC Card Reader Software isn't listed. If it is listed then you can remove it. (The MSI cleanup utility can clean up both good and failed MSI installs so make sure you don't remove anything that don't want removed!)

If you have the option of testing two machines next to each other I would run the setup.exe (not the msi) on both machines to the point where you are prompted to click next or some other interaction between you and the setup program. At this point the temporary files to run the setup should have been extracted to the temporary directory (the one above that starts c:\docume~1) I would then compare the two directories and files to make sure the file sizes are all the same.

It may be worth tyring to copy the TESTRE~1.cab file from a machine that the installation works on to the machine that keeps failing.

For information -  the MSI log file shows things like your username, company name and whether you have admin rights - I don't know how paranoid you are, but somepeople like to XXXXX these entries out before posting the log.

I noticed computer a name in there. We are on a private network. I should be ok. I didn't know how to go back and edit my message. Anyone?

I tried copying the good TESTRE-1.cab file onto the othe rmachine and no luck. I looked inside that cab file and the bad machine is looking for something it doesent or shouldnt need because it works perfect on my machine.

Ok I figured it out after lots of trying to reproduce the error I found out that the \windows\system32\common\Driver folder containing the script was infact missing or the wrong version. I had 1150 and according to the verbose logs it wanted 7.

Here is where it gets wierd. I installed version 7 but would point me back to the 1150 package prviously installed via GPolicy

So then after googling it up sure enough GPolicy sets an entry in the registry that will start pointing everything to it.

So it would fake me out like it was installing 7 when it was really just reinstalling 1150.

Ok here is my question

How do I prevent this when deploying software via GPolicy? I need clients to be able to see older versions.

Anyone?
