Question

Manual Uninstall

Asked by: AMLabels

Hi,

I have an application that will not uninstall from the Add/Remove programs list (I made a typo in the uninstall custom action). How do I remove the application from my machine so that I can install a fixed version of the application?

I've read an article from Microsoft about removing the registry key from the Uninstall folder within regedt32, but all this does is remove the 'Change' and 'Remove' buttons that usually appear in a program's entry in the Add/Remove list. The program itself still appears in this list.

http://www.informationweek.com/story/showArticle.jhtml;?articleID=171203805 is an article comparing registry cleaners - I use the free Easy Cleaner and love it.  It is also able to 'safely' remove programs from add/remove, whilst tidying up the registry to boot!

Cheers for the pointer, but this unfortunately had the same effect as manually removing the key from the registry. The 'Repair' and 'Remove' buttons have been removed from the program's entry, but the program still appears in the Add/Remove list and I cannot install a new version.

Any more ideas?

Do you have the original .MSI installation that laid down the "broken" version?

If so, you have many options :

1) You can take the originial .MSI and create a "remove" transform (where all features are removed).
2) You can create a small vbscript that reads the files/registry from the .MSI itself and then goes about removing them.
3) If it is very small simply going through the package features and going after them by hand is a possibility.

If you don't have (or have access to) the original .MSI then you can use an enterprise solution like WISE package studio or Installshield studio to do a Setup Capture on the installer which will then generate an install package which will give you the set of items that were install which you can then use the above methods to remove.

You should never, ever, setup-capture an .MSI based installation and then install from that setup-capture, BUT you can use it to reverse engineer an install.

When you say :"I made a typo in the uninstall custom action", this sounds like to me you have the root .MSI and had done some work with it. What was the typo in that custom action?

Cheers for the comments, but I've found a solution to the issue. Microsoft provide a tool for removing installed programs called msicuu2.exe which removed the application fully, including from the Add/Remove programs list.

Thanks again.

>> Do you have the original .MSI installation that laid down the "broken" version?

Strictly speaking, you don't even really need that, since every MSI that is installed is copied to %WINDIR%\Installer anyway, allbeit under a somewhat cryptic name.

>> but I've found a solution to the issue.
