The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Problem with Upgrade Leaving Files Intact

Asked by spwiggins in Windows Installer, Microsoft Visual Studio Express

Tags: Microsoft, Visual Studio, 2005, Installation Method

Hi All

Here is my problem.

I want to package a new release (update) of my software as a windows installer package. The problem is that I want to leave one of the files from the previous installation intact and not destroy/overwrite it. The program is installed in the same location as the previous version.

Firstly I set my deployment package to remove previous version....of course this removed my required file.

Next I set the option to NOT uninstall the previous version. This worked reasonably well, however in the 'Add/Remove Programs' within the control panel I now had 2 version of my software listed (and I guess it will add one for each subsequent version)...not what I want.

So it appears that I have to uninstall the previous version first, unless I can upgrade just the current installation. I thought that if I leave the ProductCode the same I may be able to do this, however Microsoft states that this property MUST change with a new version of the program (and ask you to do so if you change the version of the deployment package).

So I am a little confused as to how to proceed. I did consider marking the files in question as permanent, however I do not like this idea as I know how annoyed I get if the uninstall of a program does not remove ALL the files it installed.

Please can you advise on how you think I should proceed.

Many thanks for reading this far!

Regards

Steve
