platinumsteel,

welcome to MSI area, dedicated to Microsoft Windows Installer technology and having nothing to do with MSI motherboards or any other hardware.

You could try updating the BIOS in your board to the latest. However, see this page first, since it appears that N1996 is not a model but a permission to sell in Australia.

Once you know the correct model name of your mainboard, you may look for drivers in the following catalog:
http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=prodarchive&maincat_no=1

However, with older hardware, there is absolutely no guarantee that XP will work on it. There are cases where it simply won't.

If you want to revive such pre-XP hardware, you must resort to older versions of Windows (not really recommendable) or Linux, which is an expert in a) supporting such hardware and b) running smoothly on low system resources.

Ok well after looking in more closely I saw that the model number of the motherboard is the msi KM4M-V mobo.I have even confirmed it on the msi website and that is it.It could be found here http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=KM4M-V.At the msi website I see that the board is compatible and able to run windows xp.I really wish nobus could of come to the rescue here.He has a really good understanding of slipstreaming drivers if atold there are any for this board. All I want is to install xp on this computer.I am sure it is possible. Can anyone else here help?

Sorry, from reading the last post of yours I do not understand what your new problem is.

Recurring to your original question I read that your are "familiar with slipstreaming of drivers" so all you "would need is the driver if there are any existing".

Had you followed the link I gave above you would have ended up on this page:
http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=proddesc&maincat_no=1&cat2_no=&cat3_no=&prod_no=589

which directly links to this page full of drivers:
http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=driver&maincat_no=1&prod_no=589

also to this page with BIOS updates:
http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=bios&maincat_no=1&prod_no=589

another page with a FAQ:
http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=prodfaq&maincat_no=1&cat2_no=&cat3_no=&prod_no=589#menu

yet another one with the list of supported CPUs:
http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=prodcpusupport&maincat_no=1&cat2_no=&cat3_no=&prod_no=589#menu

and finally a download page for the manual:
http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=manual&maincat_no=1&prod_no=589

I think this is all you originally requested plus a whole lot more.
Once again, I do not understand the new problem that seems to have arisen since you correctly identified your mainboard.

But maybe there was an error already in your original assumption that your mainboard was the cause of this BSOD. I cannot recall any case where a mainboard *certified* to work with Windows XP required the slipstreaming of mainboard drivers for the installation to work. None.

You say that all the hardware built into this system "works ok". But did all this hardware actually ever run ok on this specific mainboard?
If not, maybe there is an incompatibility.
Study the mainboard overview, the FAQ, and the supported CPUs (I posted all links above). If you don't manage to identify any incompatible hardware (I myself should guess that RAM or IDE/SATA might be good candidates), it's never a bad idea to boot the system off a Linux Live CD (I'd suggest Knoppix for its extended hardware support: http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html).

If even Knoppix fails to boot you have proof that mainboard and some hardware are incompatible.
