Browse All TopicsMy friend is unable to install any .msi based packages on his computer. Unfortunately I keep asking him what he did to make this happen and he doesn't know. I ran C Cleaner and Malwarebytes in addition to the local McAfee AV on the computer and it comes up clean. I also ran the .msi fix tool from Microsoft but it hasn't been able to correct the problem. Considering this is a fairly new computer and was working fine when I installed it for him 3 months ago, I contacted Dell but there only answer was to try to repair or reformat the computer. I looked into some previous postings here but none have been able to resolve the problem. I would venture to say that if I could reverse engineer this then I would know where to look. I would be grateful if there was any possible way to prevent reformating. Thanks in advance to anyone who may have a hint or clue on how to fix this issue.

Not sure if you are receiving any kind of error message or anything, but you can try the fix posted here:

It is the last post.
Good Luck!
Barkha: This is the typical error message I get when we try to install any .msi related package; "The installation package could not be opened verify the package exists and you can open it ,or contact the application vendor to verify this is a valid windows installation package"
igor-1965: Tried this many times but it does not correct the issue (Strane, eh?) Thanks for the suggestion.
by any chance have to tried steps in http://support.microsoft.c
First I just want to thank everyone who submitted a response a big THANK YOU!
Second, I want to let you know what the solution to the problem was and how obscure it ended up being. The telephone/FIOS provided Actiontec model MI424-WR Rev. E. ended up having bad ethernet ports. That's right, all of the ethernet ports were bad. This was determined because any data that was downloaded and attemtped to be installed from any computer plugged into the ethernet port would get the same error message. Which looks as if you have a bad msi installation but we discovered it wouldn't allow any downloaded file to install. Also, if you downloaded the same file using the WiFi it would execute and install properly. We swapped out the unit with another telco/FIOS provided unit and now everything is working fine.
Again, Thank you for your suggestions they are and were greatly appreciated.
