Problem upgrading mysql to v.5 on red hat

Tags: linux / mysql, Mysql, 5, Upgrade mysql to 5 on red hat
I am trying to upgrade my version of MySQL (Currently at 4.1.22) to 5.0.51a.

I download MySQL-server-5.0.51a-0.i386.rpm  and MySQL-client-5.0.51a-0.i386.rpm packages and all seemed ok until the very end when I screamed about some table not being able to be created (I'm sorry - I closed the in window before I copied the exact error message).

Now I cannot access mysql and I get the following error messages when I try restarting the service via my WM control panel:

usr/bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)' Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' exists! mysql has failed, please contact the sysadmin (result was "Warning, no valid mysql.sock file found.mysql has failed").

Since it's not a managed VPS, support is very vague in their support (as expected). This is what they have said:

"You have mixed versions of MySQL and required support libraries installed:

-bash-3.00# rpm -qa | grep MySQL
MySQL-shared-4.1.22-0.glibc23
MySQL-embedded-4.1.22-0.glibc23
MySQL-bench-4.1.22-0.glibc23
MySQL-server-5.0.51a-0
MySQL-devel-4.1.22-0.glibc23
MySQL-client-5.0.51a-0

You'll need to remove embedded, and update the rest."

What do they mean by me needing to "remove embedded"? I guess this means I have to remove all 4.1.22 versions first? Can anyone tell me how all of this might be done ot walk me through it??

The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.
