It seems if I take an program that works under XP and try to run it under Vista, I get "File/Path error" where I do MKDIR. Looking at the folder security for the the application folder, it seems that the USER group (or any other groupd) does not have the priviledge to create folders UNLESS I run the application as admistrator, then it works. My question is, are all previous programs written been Vista going to have to be run as administrator in order to allow for folder/file creations within the Program Files folder structure? I understand the reaons why default admin rights were taken away, but it would seem like the public is going to have to deal with this with alot of current programs. I would not imaine an installer would have the ability to reset these priviledges because it would defeat the purpose of it all, but does anyone have a list or know what NOT to do in order to allow a program to work in a standard Vista context?

Good article mrdany. I have an application that is writing and deleting small files all the time, I create debug files, etc. Do you have any idea what is the standard way of doing this now? It almost sounds like you have to create another folder for changeable data outside the Program Files structure. Seems like that virtual system is ok, but it will not last, and things will be back to the way they were in a couple of years.
for Vista Store shared application data and configuration files in the common AppData folder. Under Vista, this is typically the C:\ProgramData folder.
For per-user data and configuration files, store them in the user’s AppData folder, typically C:\Users\<UserName>\AppDat
