Question

Altiris DS Rapid Install 3.2 - Undo file question

Asked by: Naerwen

All,

We have an installation (well .... 3 installations) of Altiris DS. Our DS is currently at:

Version 6.9 (Build 375)
Service Pack 2

Our Rapid Install is at:
Version 3.2

... I am well aware that this product was replaced by the Wise packagin solution (for the desktop ... or something)

In any case. I am stuck using this tool.

Those things said (... and hopefull understood) My question is .... how do you get the "Create Undo File" option in the RIP Options tab to work. I have tried the command line version from the DS as well as the check box option shown here in the image. All to no avail.

Please advise .... if you can.

Here is what we have done.

1) We have successfully created the necessary RIP.

2) We have successfully deployed the necessary RIP.

... Now this is the part where we get stuck ...

3) We need to remove the RIP using either a the UNDO file (which is the easiest ... if it works.) or some other remote means.

THE REASON IS THAT IN ORDER TO REMOVE THE <PIECE OF CRAP> APPLICATION <THAT SOME MGR BOUGHT> YOU HAVE TO DISABLE THE N.I.C. Obviously ... this make remoting into the machine NOT AN OPTION.

Please let me know if more information is needed.

hmmm, this really looks like a permissions issue.  Did you ensure that you have permissions to do this?

HTH

by: MightySWPosted on 2009-10-23 at 08:15:30ID: 25645214

NTFS permissions that is.

by: NaerwenPosted on 2009-10-23 at 10:28:05ID: 25646512

MightySW,

I am admin on the domain, on the box and on the machine we are testing the deployment to. So I do not believe that it is a permissions issue. Further, what we are trying to accomplish/figure out is why the "Create UNDO file" option is not working as stated in the help file...not whether the file is being created or erroring our while attempting to be created ... that would at least be an improvment.

According to the help file 'Create UNDO File' - "Creates a separate undo executable file, which when run, reverses the changes made by the RIP."

by: igor-1965Posted on 2009-10-23 at 11:12:38ID: 25646871

Used it really long time ago but as far as I may recall it the UNDO file was created NOT at time of creation of RIP but at the moment when you apply RIP to computer (could not recall where it resides on the target system).

by: NaerwenPosted on 2009-10-23 at 11:16:05ID: 25646899

igor-1965,

Correct. We just went through the help files again. We found that the 'UNDO FILE' is supposed to be dropped into the temp folder where the RIPs setup files are stored for deployment. In our case, however, said temp folder is being deleted upon completion of the RIPs deployment.

Any ideas? Please advise.

Thank you,

Naerwen

Change NTFS permission (on the folder where temp file is being created / deleted) to DENY deletion.
Hope it will help to preserve UNDO file.

Any updates on the issue?

by: MightySWPosted on 2009-10-26 at 12:31:21ID: 25665836

This would be an example of an NTFS permissions issue...

by: dstewartjrPosted on 2009-10-26 at 12:43:44ID: 25665956

Hmmm......Permissions......I wish I would have thought of that.

... so be it ... I will change the permissions and provide images.

All,

I was out sick for 2 days. I am testing the permissions issue just now. We should have results shortly.

Thus far the permissions issue theory is not accurate. GIve me a few minutes to upload the supporting images.

I object - the author did not provide a resolution to his problem. After 2 weeks when author kept promising to provide additional information, over a sudden there is a change in plans and now author plans (not actually done that) to use another product. The original question was - "how can I fix Altris RapidInstall feature". The question was not formulated like "what tool I could use to uninstall application".  So the author plans to change and try another application is irrelevant to the question and cannot be accepted as a solution.

very well ... I've not had much luck with wfwi either.

by: igor-1965Posted on 2009-11-06 at 09:15:50ID: 25761011

Let's start from the begging. I need to create RIP for one application so I will be creating it with Undo option to refresh my memory where and how it works.

On your side, could you please provide the images you were going to post?

Thanks

by: igor-1965Posted on 2009-11-06 at 11:07:51ID: 25762073

1. Created RIP (with UNDO option)
2. Created Altiris job to deploy RIP
3. Deployed RIP to a target computer.

After the job completed I have found undo file in c:\windows\temp\altiristemp on the TARGET computer.

4. Copied undo file to Altiris server
5. Created Altiris job for deploying undo file
6. Run the job and confirmed the application has been uninstall.

I would apologize for the ridiculous amount of time this took. However, since we're all in IT, I'm sure you understand that we get sucked into things from time to time. That was the case with this issue. I was asked to go down many avenues at one time. Therefore, I simply got too busy to remain engaged with this question. No apologies are implied or conferred. We all have work to do and, from time to time, something has to give.

I am happy to say that I will split the points between MightySW and Igor.

dstewartjr's comments were extremely counter-productive...to say the least.

In this particular instance the Grade of A will be assigned to MightySW and Igor as their comments contained substance and were most useful.

MightySW and Igor ... you may find the images validating your suggestions attached.

Again, I do not apologize for the time it took. It is in our nature to get pulled in many directions.

Thank you ... MightySW and IGOR for your help. You two were correct.

MightySW and Igor's answers were dead on. Even though it took a really long time to prove the solutions ... both had answered correctly and without contempt for the time it took. I truly thank them for their assistance and hope this article makes the KB.

LOL....seeing as I pointed mighty  to this thread telling him it was a permissions isssue

by: NaerwenPosted on 2009-11-12 at 13:12:28ID: 25809004

dstewartjr ... you are so socially bankrupt. You just can't accept the fact that you complain endlessly about the grades you get. After researching some of your answers ... I've found that you complain [endlessly] if you get less than a B ... even when it is warranted. What you fail to see here ... is that MightSW [even under your direction] and Igor had class and patience ... to help me find the answer.

Class and paitence ... that is where you fail, sir and I suspect you will never change.

Again, thank you MightSW and Igor for giving real help and not relying on a moderator to get your points. Good show gents .... good show.
