Question

can't install (kb95397) Microsoft.net framework 1.1 SP1 security update

Asked by: lucivero

It downloads fine, when I try to install it, it tells me that the feature I am trying to install is on a CDROM or other removable disk is not available.  It tells me to insert scan disk and click ok.  I have no idea what disk it is looking for, it seems to be looking for a file called scan.msi, where would I find it?  So I just click OK.  It tells me I have an error 1706 no valid source code found for product scan and windows installer can not continue.
I have no idea what it is trying to scan?
The main problem is it never works but it never stops trying, can't get rid of it.  However I would like to install it, since it is a Critical fix.
By the way, I am running WindowsXP.
Anyone else have this problem?

If the problem still remains unresolved, take a look at these excellent articles by Aaron Stebner, you should find the answer here>

In the above article it's worth reading some (or all) of the reader's comments. For example, reference is made to temporarily disabling your anti-virus/anti-spyware software then trying to run the setup again.
It states   <quote> Some programs like this get overly aggressive and can interfere with product installations <unquote>.

by: ozrichPosted on 2009-10-28 at 01:46:59ID: 25681010

It sounds like the installation is trying to point to a location that doesn't exist. With Windows Installer this can happen if a product such as Office in the past has been installed from a drive that no longer exists (such as usb, network or CD).

ram_kerala how do you know 3.5 will work on my system.  I would've expected that the Windows updates I've been installing would have told me to upgrade, if this were the case.  I would rather try some of the other options first, that are less risky.

optoma, I tried what you said, it went a bit further but did not install.  Got the following message:The following updates were not installed:  Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 Security Update for Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2 (KB953297)

Firstly create a restore point.
Download its offline installer. Try it in safe mode first to install

Jonvee: I was looking through the Aaron Stebner's weblog you suggested and went to uninstall the version I had and to reinstall the version I had and then try to install the update again.
When I went to the control panel and clicked on add/remove programs, I noticed that I had already had 3.5 installed.  I don't know why windows update  wanted me to install this fix for 1.1?  Maybe that is why it did not work.  So I guess I don't really need the update.
So now the only problem remaining is how to remove the update that was downloaded, so it doesn't constantly try to install and fail.

Thanks

Some programs require a certain version of net framework to work and run correctly, as far as I'm aware of. So if a program on that machine requires net 1.1, it could be left vulnerable without its security update.

by: ozrichPosted on 2009-10-28 at 21:22:16ID: 25690626

Some applications require different versions of .NET framework. For example, if a program was developed in .NET after 1.1 was released before 3.5, you could have 3.5 but the program still might not work unless you have 1.1.

If 1.1 is installed correctly then install 1.1 Service Pack too.

I would recommend installing 1.1, 3 and 3.5

by: JonveePosted on 2009-10-29 at 00:56:10ID: 25691353

i agree with the last comments from optoma and ozrich .. it would be prudent to retain all versions of .NET framework that you may have installed, & updated with it's appropriate security update.

There's a useful statement in Aaron Stebner's article
<quote>You do not need to install 2.0 then SP1 and SP2, 3.0 then SP1 and SP2, or 3.5 then SP1 as separate steps like you do for 1.0 and 1.1. Instead you can skip directly to installing 2.0 SP2, 3.0 SP2 and 3.5 SP1. <unquote>

This MS article may also be helpful>
When you try to install an update for the .NET Framework 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 3.0, or 3.5, you may receive Windows Update error code "0x643" or Windows Installer error code "1603":

Found this MS article ...
You receive a "Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 (KB867460) cannot be installed " error message when you install the .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/889109

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
Locate and then click the following subkey in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\.NETFramework\1.1\M827821
On the Edit menu, click Delete.
Click Yes to confirm that you want to delete the subkey.
Exit Registry Editor.
Run the Setup program for the .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 again.

Let's go back to basics fellas.

Can you please advise the error message word for word, exactly as it appears on the screen including in the title bar.

If possible, attach a screen shot of the error.

by: luciveroPosted on 2009-10-29 at 13:36:26ID: 25697970

When you press the icon in the task bar that tells you, you have updates waiting to be installed:

First thing that happens is a Window pops up labled Automatic Updates and after a few minutes it shows the following text:

Initializing installation... done!

Installing Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 Security Update for Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2 (KB953297) (update 1 of 1)...

              Some updates were not installed:

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 Security Update for Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 R2 (KB953297)

* A few minutes later a SCAN dialog box pops up, which says:
The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available.
Insert the 'Scan' disk and click OK
Underneath this is a pulldown that is labeled "use source:"
inside the pulldown is the number "1", if you click the pulldown the only  choice is "1"
   So I click on OK

When you do this a 'Scan' window pops up: that says, please wait while windows completes your scan, with a update bar that increases like it is working, it gets half way through and then stops.  You can wait for more than an hour and nothing ever changes after that.

So my only choice is to press the cancel button.

After you cancel it a few minutes later the SCAN dialog box pops up and you start all over again from where the * is. this will go on several more times (like it is in a loop)

It is hard to get anything done when you are constantly have to attend to the messages.

If I knew how to take the screen shots and paste them here I would have, since I didn't  I just went through the process and copied what I saw happen.

by: JonveePosted on 2009-10-29 at 14:05:12ID: 25698258

Incidently are you running any Norton/Semantec or McAfee products, please?
If you have not yet thoroughly checked for Malware, may i suggest downloading then updating Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware:
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
When updated, reboot into Safe Mode by selecting F8 at bootup & run a scan.

Tutorial available, if you require >

by: ram_keralaPosted on 2009-10-29 at 18:09:40ID: 25699544

lucivero,

See if in eventvwr you are getting an error as below

When you try to install an update for the .NET Framework 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 3.0, or 3.5, you may receive Windows Update error code "0x643" or Windows Installer error code "1603"

In that case, download Windows Installer CleanUp Utility  from the below link

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923100

In case if you suspect the downloaded hotfix files are courrpted you can download manually and install from the same link

by: luciveroPosted on 2009-10-30 at 18:19:09ID: 25707915

optoma, I read through the links you provided.  The first one sounded like the problem
but I could not find the scan.msi file on the CD for the printer or on my hard drive.
I do have an all-in-one HP printer that can scan documents and pictures but there is no
scan.msi file anywher I can find.  In my case, it is looking for this file but it is nowhere to be found on CD or hard drive.
The second link told me to download the windows installer cleanup utility, when I went to do it, I notice I had already tried this because the file was still in my dowloads folder.
So, unfortunetly neither items worked.  Thanks anyway for your time .

by: ozrichPosted on 2009-10-30 at 18:24:04ID: 25707928

Do you have a HP Printer, Scanner, Multifunction device or other HP Hardware?

by: luciveroPosted on 2009-10-30 at 18:29:34ID: 25707943

Jonvee, I do have symantec products but I turned them off after learning that my ISP offered a free version of the CA Security suite.  I now use CA it has found stuff that Symatec's Anti-Virus did not find.
I tried downloading the AntiMalware program but it was flagged as a link to a virus site and recommended I not download it.  Not wanting to screw up my system even more I decided not to do it.

by: luciveroPosted on 2009-10-30 at 18:39:53ID: 25707970

ram_kerala, I ran the event viewer and found this warning many times:
Detection of product '{F3760724-B29D-465B-BC53-E5D72095BCC4}', feature 'Scan' failed during request for component '{436D7A23-36BE-11D2-ACBB-0080C7FCBB84}'

I also found this error about 6 times:
The description for Event ID ( 5000 ) in Source ( NativeWrapper ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event: visualstudio7x80update, msiexec.exe, 1.0.1622.4946, kb953297, 1033, 643, f, install, x86, 5.1.2600.2.3.0.256, 0.

does any of this mean anything to you ?

I also noted in the original dscription of the problem I get the following error code:
1706 no valid source code for could be found for product scan, windows installer can not continue.  I assume because it can not find scan.msi

by: luciveroPosted on 2009-10-30 at 18:42:22ID: 25707972

Thanks for all your suggestions, I am hoping that sooner or later someone will find one what will work for me.

by: ozrichPosted on 2009-10-30 at 18:45:16ID: 25707984

lucivero - please reply to my post!

You could try reistalling the HP product
http://welcome.hp.com/country/ie/en/support.html

Create a restore point first..

by: ozrichPosted on 2009-10-31 at 06:28:45ID: 25709680

Can anyone view my comments?

by: optomaPosted on 2009-10-31 at 07:15:29ID: 25709878

Yup!

by: ozrichPosted on 2009-10-31 at 08:36:37ID: 25710149

Well, I guess lucivero is happy with your assistance!! :)

However, this appears to be an issue with the installation of a HP Product, perhaps a scanner indicating scan.msi

Good luck with it all.

by: JonveePosted on 2009-10-31 at 13:26:30ID: 25711408

lucivero, thanks for the earlier feedback.

As you no longer use your Norton/Symantec products and because simply turning them off is often not sufficient, it's ~possible~ that NAV is preventing the successful install of .Net Framework components.   You could consider completely removing it with the following tool>

Norton Removal Tool (SymNRT) 2009.0.5.26:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/Norton_Removal_Tool_SymNRT_d4749.html

The steps differ depending on what product you have:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039?Open&docid=2005092709200113&nsf=sharedtech.nsf&view=docid

@ ozrich .. he'll probably get to your suggestion by tomorrow, & i would hang in there   :)

by: luciveroPosted on 2009-11-03 at 20:52:01ID: 25736488

Sorry ozrich, I haven't been on the computer for a while.  Yes I do have a printer/scanner (HP Photosmart all in one C3180).
I don't understand what it is trying to scan.  I even put the hp printer disk in the CD tray and pointed the drop down to the CD drive.  Didn't work.  I scanned the cd looking for that file but was not found.  I don't see how this can help.

by: luciveroPosted on 2009-11-03 at 21:24:49ID: 25736643

It may be a coincidence, it seems every time I start the Explorer to do something on the web, the scan always starts up again.
Just another clue.

by: ozrichPosted on 2009-11-03 at 21:48:52ID: 25736729

lucivero, I know it may not make sense but I would recommend the following:

Uninstall all and any HP applications/hardware installed
Uninstall all and any .NET Framework applications installed
Run the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility for any .NET Framework and HP Apps
Try installing .NET Framework again

Post back results here

by: luciveroPosted on 2009-11-04 at 22:23:21ID: 25747139

jonvee, I ran the norton removoval tool, to uninstall all of the Symantec products on the system, but it still does not work.

One new thing I noticed that when you start up the computer and it trys to install the update, it returns a new error code 2761 internal error.

by: luciveroPosted on 2009-11-04 at 22:25:35ID: 25747152

ozrich, how I determine which applications are .Net framework applications?

by: ozrichPosted on 2009-11-04 at 22:40:22ID: 25747209

Sorry, what I meant was remove the .net framework.

It will say "Microsoft .NET Framework" and then a version.

For example, "Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1"
