Unrecognized configuration section 'connectionStrings' when using .NET 2.0

Tags: configuration, section, unrecognized
I have been moving web apps from two old servers to a new box.  All has been fine until now.

I have an issue with a site based on .NET 2.0.  When the site loads you get " Unrecognized configuration section 'connectionStrings' ".  Now i know this normally means that the app is still using the .NET 1.1 framework and it needs to be set to 2.0.  But this has already been done.

It says the problem lies in the webconfig file here;.       Line 18:       <connectionStrings>

.NET 2.0 is installed, and is set correctly in the ASP.NET tab.  The app is pooled in a seperate section as i know you can get issues running 1.1 and 2.0 .NET apps alongside each other.  IIS has been restarted many times as has the server, but repeatedly i get the same problem.

The most puzzling thing is even though the app is set to .NET 2.0 and it is all installed ok the framework version at the bottom of the error says the following:

Version Information: Microsoft .NET Framework Version:1.1.4322.2407; ASP.NET Version:1.1.4322.2407

I have scoured the web and all i can find is info on that the app should be changed to .NET 2.0 to fix, which it is already!  As a result i open this up to you boffins for aid!

The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.
