Hi,

I am creating a new website on a clean build of Server 2003, Standard Edition Release 2 SP2.

I am creating the site in Visual Studio, using AJAX Extensions - 1.0 on the .NET Framework 2.

I create a new AJAX-Enabled website, with one page in it, and add a simple textbox control to the page, with a TextBox Watermark Extender control.

However, when I attempt to run the project, I get the error "Unknown server tag 'cc1:TextBoxWatermarkExtender'."

My code is below:

Can anyone advise as to what is going on? I've spent hours trawling Google trying to find a solution to this, and they all say the same thing: Put the following line in your web.config, in the system.web>pages>controls declaration.

        <add tagPrefix="cc1" namespace="AjaxControlToolkit" assembly="AjaxControlToolkit"/>

Unfortunately, this does not work.

Any suggestions you can give will be greatly appreciated.

your codes work perfectly with me, try adding adding ScriptManager by drag drop method from toolbox, it should automatically add reference in your web.config file.

Else post your web.config file so others can analysis the same.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply - I tried re-adding the ScriptManager using drag-and-drop from the toolbox, but it still didn't work.

As far as I can tell, there isn't anything wrong with the code itself, as it works locally. It is just when the project is run on a web server sitting on our network that I get the error.

I think no need to change your web.config file as on local machine your are running perfectly for this error.

Please check if you have AjaxControlToolkit.dll file in bin folder of your site on server and you have permissions to the same.

The AjaxControlToolkit.dll file is in the bin folder on the server, and the permissions all seem fine - besides, the project will run remotely if there are no AJAX controls in the pages.

I am out of ideas.
Can you just check is it only 'cc1:TextBoxWatermarkExtender' is not working or other ajax extenders are also having same problem.

If its only the case of TextBoxWaterMark then may be the Ajax Control dll file is different then working machine.

I've checked the versions of the DLLs on both machines, and they are identical.

It seems to be that Visual Studio doesn't like referencing the DLL when you are running a project over a network share.

In which case, can anyone suggest an alternative solution to allow us both to work on the same project at the same time?

Hi, thanks for the comments but I have just resolved this. - It wasn't an issue with the web.config, or the code.

The problem is to do with trust of the DLL.

 Go to Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Configuration and expand the My Computer tree.

Click on Runtime Security Policy

Click on Increase Assembly Trust

Follow the wizard, and browse to the dll ON THE SERVER.

(So, it would be Your Share:\Your Website Folder\bin\AjaxControlToolkit.dll )

Then re-start Visual Studio, and magic, it works.

 I hope this helps anyone else who encounters the problem, as I have spent three days trawling through various forums without finding a solution.

Fantastic!

I have been searching for this solution for a while now. Simply referencing the DLL is not sufficient - it's this security fix that is needed. It's such a pity that VS 2008 couldn't produce a more usable error message!
