Unable to install .net framework 3.5 SP1 on Server 2008

.Net 2.0 SP1 is a good start... Then there is 3.0 as well... and so on...

There are some dependancies in 3.5 on 3 and 2.0SP1- have you checked the detailed logs ? It normally shows where the problem is...

Might have to rollback 2.0 SP1, and 3.5 (if it is registered - sometimes happens) and start again.

You can also try the FULL 3.5 which includes : net 2.0+Sp1 + .Net 3.0 +sp1 + .net 3.5 then apply 3.5 SP1

because there was a small bug apparently, and this tool apparently finds / fixes that problem (see : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821 )

Aaahhh well, that probably explain the subsequent difficulties - it cannot install SP1 properly... Did you run up the "readiness tool" ? Or did you uninstall it (and 3 and 3.5) and try again...

Need to see the full / detailed error log.

but it said this update does not apply to my system.

OK, that readiness tool should have been the Vista 64bit version : the link to that was on the same page as the link pasted above. Direct link is :

Same file, even though it's on a different download page. When I tried to download it, it's the same exact package as the Server 2008 (x64) package.

OK, then would suggest that there was an install failure of one of the items that 2.0sp1 is dependant on (kind of stating the obvious). It could mean either it is trying to remove / replace an already installed component, or, something was not installed properly prior to SP1.

The "nice" thing about that readiness tool is that it fairly aggressively inspects those components and does the "appropriate" thing. Surprised that it is the Server 2008 version - have seen a few postings on MS web site that reckons it fixes the Vista problem. Here is the KB article relating to it : http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=947821 The vista version does have a slightly different date, but tend to agree with you, it looks the same. Still...

The only other way is to start uninstalling the .Net framework back to 2.0 and re-applying, and hope that the more recent updates have actually addressed some of the original install issues. Then try manually installing 2.0 again, which should just refresh / repair, followed by SP1, or the full 3.5 which includes SP1.

Also, double check that version of 2008 - whilst it does install some 32 bit items, it is complaining about x86-orcas (which could be the correct version).

I am having a similar issue related to .net 3.5. When I attempt to install SQL Server 2008 I immediately receive "Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Installation has failed. SQL Server 2008 Setup requires .NET Framework 3.5 to be installed.

I have attached a copy of my dd_dotnetfx35install.txt for review. We downloaded the .net 3.5 SP1 install from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=AB99342F-5D1A-413D-8319-81DA479AB0D7&displaylang=en

We have attempted the install on PC's running XP SP2 & SP3 and still the same issue.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

there is a link to the full package part way down the page - along with a feed back area - would be inclined to use both of those.

Have downloaded the full 227MB .net 3.5 sp1 package.... same error. In fact I've given up on the SQL install for now and am just trying to run the package directly.

I'm on hold with Microsoft at the moment to use one of my precious support incidents. Bastards!

The thing with that link is it says it was published on the 18th November - I know we have talked about it prior to that date - just thinking that there has been an update...

But5 at this point, would be escalating to Microsoft... Please keep us informed...

I found the issue with this. Turns out I was running a Checked Build of Server 2008, not a release build. I found the answer here.
