Question

Unable to install .net framework 3.5 SP1 on Server 2008

Asked by: Ivrnet

Hi, I have a clean install of Server 2008 Enterprise x64. I'm trying to install SQL 2008 Enterprise x64, but it requires .net 3.5 SP1. It attempts to install it as part of the SQL install, but fails with the error "DepCheck indicates Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0SP1 (x64) (CBS) is not installed."

I've tried installing .net 2.0, but I get an error that says .net 2.0 is included as part of the operating system.

I found somewhere on the internet that you need to have IIS installed for .net 3.5 to work, so I installed that feature. Same error though, "DepCheck indicates Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0SP1 (x64) (CBS) is not installed.".

Anyone have any other ideas that I haven't tried yet?

I think you might have to install .Net 2.0 SP1.

by: mark_willsPosted on 2008-10-21 at 04:20:43ID: 22766092

.Net 2.0 SP1 is a good start... Then there is 3.0 as well... and so on...

There are some dependancies in 3.5 on 3 and 2.0SP1- have you checked the detailed logs ? It normally shows where the problem is...

Might have to rollback 2.0 SP1, and 3.5 (if it is registered - sometimes happens) and start again.

You can also try the FULL 3.5 which includes : net 2.0+Sp1 + .Net 3.0 +sp1 + .net 3.5 then apply 3.5 SP1

But, it is also worthwhile going to :  http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=32978546-8108-408F-B78E-0E95EFF14C92&displaylang=en

because there was a small bug apparently, and this tool apparently finds / fixes that problem (see : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821 )

For those 3.5 framework (FULL and SP1) can get from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/results.aspx?pocId=&freetext=.net%20framework%203.5&DisplayLang=en

Aaahhh well, that probably explain the subsequent difficulties - it cannot install SP1 properly... Did you run up the "readiness tool" ? Or did you uninstall it (and 3 and 3.5) and try again...

Need to see the full / detailed error log.

by: IvrnetPosted on 2008-11-05 at 11:50:28ID: 22889045

Can you point me to a link to the readiness tool? Thanks.

by: IvrnetPosted on 2008-11-05 at 12:09:51ID: 22889226

I downloaded at attempted to run the readiness tool found here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=32978546-8108-408f-b78e-0e95eff14c92&DisplayLang=en

but it said this update does not apply to my system.

Trying install again so I can generate full error logs.

OK, that readiness tool should have been the Vista 64bit version : the link to that was on the same page as the link pasted above. Direct link is :

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=14F76773-007C-493F-BECE-243BC21AC73D&displaylang=en

Would still try that first.

by: IvrnetPosted on 2008-11-05 at 15:47:07ID: 22891286

Same file, even though it's on a different download page. When I tried to download it, it's the same exact package as the Server 2008 (x64) package.

by: mark_willsPosted on 2008-11-05 at 16:13:27ID: 22891399

OK, then would suggest that there was an install failure of one of the items that 2.0sp1 is dependant on (kind of stating the obvious). It could mean either it is trying to remove / replace an already installed component, or, something was not installed properly prior to SP1.

The "nice" thing about that readiness tool is that it fairly aggressively inspects those components and does the "appropriate" thing. Surprised that it is the Server 2008 version - have seen a few postings on MS web site that reckons it fixes the Vista problem. Here is the KB article relating to it : http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=947821 The vista version does have a slightly different date, but tend to agree with you, it looks the same. Still...

The only other way is to start uninstalling the .Net framework back to 2.0 and re-applying, and hope that the more recent updates have actually addressed some of the original install issues. Then try manually installing 2.0 again, which should just refresh / repair, followed by SP1, or the full 3.5 which includes SP1.

Also, double check that version of 2008 - whilst it does install some 32 bit items, it is complaining about x86-orcas (which could be the correct version).

Hello All,

I am having a similar issue related to .net 3.5. When I attempt to install SQL Server 2008 I immediately receive "Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Installation has failed. SQL Server 2008 Setup requires .NET Framework 3.5 to be installed.

I have attached a copy of my dd_dotnetfx35install.txt for review. We downloaded the .net 3.5 SP1 install from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=AB99342F-5D1A-413D-8319-81DA479AB0D7&displaylang=en

We have attempted the install on PC's running XP SP2 & SP3 and still the same issue.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

I'm losing my mind. WHen I try to install .net 3.5 i get

[10/02/08,11:02:14] Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0SP1 (x64) (CBS): [2] Error: Installation failed for component Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0SP1 (x64) (CBS). MSI returned error code 1
[10/02/08,11:03:04] WapUI: [2] DepCheck indicates Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0SP1 (x64) (CBS) is not installed.

When I try to install .net 2.0 SP1 I get

Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP1
This product is not supported on Vista Operating System.

Aaaaargh!

by: mark_willsPosted on 2008-11-19 at 14:28:21ID: 22999399

That is very frustrating...

Microsoft have just released 3.5 SP1 - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=ab99342f-5d1a-413d-8319-81da479ab0d7&DisplayLang=en

there is a link to the full package part way down the page - along with a feed back area - would be inclined to use both of those.

by: IvrnetPosted on 2008-11-19 at 14:30:32ID: 22999428

Have downloaded the full 227MB .net 3.5 sp1 package.... same error. In fact I've given up on the SQL install for now and am just trying to run the package directly.

I'm on hold with Microsoft at the moment to use one of my precious support incidents. Bastards!

by: mark_willsPosted on 2008-11-19 at 15:24:32ID: 22999827

The thing with that link is it says it was published on the 18th November - I know we have talked about it prior to that date - just thinking that there has been an update...

But5 at this point, would be escalating to Microsoft... Please keep us informed...

by: IvrnetPosted on 2008-11-26 at 15:59:14ID: 23046911

I found the issue with this. Turns out I was running a Checked Build of Server 2008, not a release build. I found the answer here.

http://guyellisrocks.com/random/installation-failed-for-component-microsoft-net-framework-2-0sp1/

Thanks for all your effort.
