.Net 2.0 SP1 is a good start... Then there is 3.0 as well... and so on...
There are some dependancies in 3.5 on 3 and 2.0SP1- have you checked the detailed logs ? It normally shows where the problem is...
Might have to rollback 2.0 SP1, and 3.5 (if it is registered - sometimes happens) and start again.
You can also try the FULL 3.5 which includes : net 2.0+Sp1 + .Net 3.0 +sp1 + .net 3.5 then apply 3.5 SP1

I think you might have to install .Net 2.0 SP1.
