Question

.Net attach file to email.

Asked by: Fraser_Admin

http://www.codeproject.com/kb/reporting-services/ssrs_pdf.aspx

i'm trying to use the following project.  No problem using it.  My issue is that i'm trying to actually have access to the rendered pdf file at runtime to allow a user to email it to a third party.  I will have the email address setup in an sql table.  I have generated email from .net code in the past, but not attached files to them.

Is this possible?

right, but how do i get the returned pdf file?  if you run the same on the page i attached, it just renders and opens up asking if you want to save or open.  i would like to save it automatically, then attach it to the email.  is this possible?

Attaching files to email messages is a strait forward practice in .Net.
Please check the code sample below

Dim message As MailMessage = New System.Net.Mail.MailMessage("Fromaddress@YourCompnay.com", "ToAddress@domain.com")
Dim MyAtatchment As System.Net.Mail.Attachment
MyAtatchment = New Net.Mail.Attachment("c:\folder\File1.pdf")
message.Attachments.Add(MyAtatchment)
Dim client As System.Net.Mail.SmtpClient = New System.Net.Mail.SmtpClient(SMTPServer, SMTPServerPort)
 client.Credentials = New System.Net.NetworkCredential(SMTPUserName, SMTPUserPassword, SMTPDomain)
client.Send(message)

no my issue is not with attaching the file, my issue is with saving the pdf file to access it.

please check out the link i posted.

it creates a pdf file on the fly for a reporting services page.  problem is it comes up to the user save/open.

I don't want that to come up.  I want to save the pdf file automatically so i can access it using similar code to what you just posted.

Ok

You need to remove all the code starting from the link contains rsExec.Render(format, deviceInfo, out extension, out encoding, out mimeType, out warnings, out streamIDs);
and replace it with the attached code to save the fiile to local disk. once you save it to the disk, then you can attached it to your email.

byte[] File = rsExec.Render(format, deviceInfo, out extension, out encoding, out mimeType, out warnings, out streamIDs);
System.IO.StreamWriter sw =new System.IO.StreamWriter("c:\Test.pdf");
sw.Write(File);
sw.Close();

Please check the updated code if you had any issues.

byte[] File = rsExec.Render(format, deviceInfo, out extension, out encoding, out mimeType, out warnings, out streamIDs);
System.IO.StreamWriter sw =new System.IO.StreamWriter("c:\\Test.pdf");
string FileString = System.Text.Encoding.ASCII.GetString(File);
sw.Write(FileString);
sw.Close();

no errors, but it still comes up to save it.  it created the file, but there is nothing in it??

by: AlsaeedPosted on 2009-10-05 at 12:19:23ID: 25498580

You need to remove the following lines from the page code:
  Response.AddHeader("content-disposition", "attachment; filename=pdf01.pdf");
        Response.OutputStream.Write(results, 0, results.Length);
        Response.End();

ok this is what i have now.  i commented out a bunch of stuff.

now it doesn't prompted me to do the save, and i see a file craeted at my root of c, but there is no data in it.

//results = rsExec.Render(format, deviceInfo, out extension, out encoding, out mimeType, out warnings, out streamIDs);

        byte[] File = rsExec.Render(format, deviceInfo, out extension, out encoding, out mimeType, out warnings, out streamIDs);
        System.IO.StreamWriter sw = new System.IO.StreamWriter("c:\\pdf01.pdf");
        string FileString = System.Text.Encoding.ASCII.GetString(File);
        sw.Write(FileString);
        sw.Close();

        //Response.AddHeader("content-disposition", "attachment; filename=pdf01.pdf");
        //Response.OutputStream.Write(results, 0, results.Length);

        //This is very important if you want to directly download from stream instead of file
        //Response.End();

by: AlsaeedPosted on 2009-10-05 at 12:27:35ID: 25498663

Your code seems to be fine now,
Now, you need to make sure that your report has some data in the first palce.
Then try to check the length of FileString and File vairables to track where the data get lost..
Please try this and post your findings here

by: Fraser_AdminPosted on 2009-10-05 at 12:31:39ID: 25498710

i get these errors.  how do i check the length of these variables?

yes the report has some data.  when i do it the orignal way it works fine.

Error      1      'string' does not contain a definition for 'length'      C:\Data\Development\RsPdf\RsPdf.aspx.cs      91      35      C:\...\RsPdf\
Error      2      'System.Array' does not contain a definition for 'length'      C:\Data\Development\RsPdf\RsPdf.aspx.cs      92      29      C:\...\RsPdf\

Good news.
Did you check the size of the created file?

by: Fraser_AdminPosted on 2009-10-05 at 12:42:17ID: 25498830

?? what do you mean?  can you post a code sample for that.

by: AlsaeedPosted on 2009-10-05 at 12:44:05ID: 25498858

We need to check the prosperities of the created file c:\pdf01.pdf and see its size.

by: Fraser_AdminPosted on 2009-10-05 at 12:48:40ID: 25498910

following code prints out 7345

FileInfo fi = new FileInfo("c:\\BIGTEST.pdf");
        long len = fi.Length;

        Response.Write(len);

by: AlsaeedPosted on 2009-10-05 at 12:51:37ID: 25498940

Ok. great..
The problem seems to be related to file encoding..
Please replace System.IO.StreamWriter sw = new System.IO.StreamWriter("c:\\pdf01.pdf");
 with the code below and let me know.

 System.IO.StreamWriter sw = new System.IO.StreamWriter("c:\\pdf01.pdf", false, System.Text.Encoding.UTF8);

Same file size?

by: Fraser_AdminPosted on 2009-10-05 at 12:56:56ID: 25498997

yes

by: AlsaeedPosted on 2009-10-05 at 13:04:05ID: 25499076

Ok,

We need to write binary data. So, we need to replace StreamWriter to FileStream.
Please replace the code that starts with  System.IO.StreamWriter sw = new System.IO.StreamWriter("c:\\pdf01.pdf", false, System.Text.Encoding.UTF8);
 until sw.Close(); with the following code...

System.IO.FileStream sw = new System.IO.FileStream("c:\\pdf01.pdf", FileMode.CreateNew , FileAccess.Write);
sw.Write(File, 0, File.Length);
sw.Close();
