MS SQL + Query to get Top 1 from Group

I am trying to build a query that takes some data, and then takes one row from each grouping inside the set of data.

so data might be customerID, customername, ordernumber, orderdate

i pull  the list with a data range, which could have up to 5 entries per customerid, i then want to pull just 1 row from each group of customerids
