Question

Reading Images from SQL into a Datalist

Asked by: rock815

I'm having a problem reading images from a sql table to a datalist...   The end result is a small custom photo gallery, nothing intense.  If there is a better way than I'm trying, please let me know.  Keep in mind, I'm a Jr. Level Programmer, so I'm not quite as technical as some on asp.net...  Thanks for your help in advance:

Presentation Layer:

                                                <asp:DataList id="dlImages" style="Z-INDEX: 101; LEFT: 32px; POSITION: absolute; TOP: 24px" runat="server"
                        RepeatColumns="3" RepeatDirection="Horizontal">

                        <ItemTemplate>
                              <%# LoadImage(Container.DataItem("imagefile")) %>
                        </ItemTemplate>

                  </asp:DataList>

Code-Behind:

Private Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
        dlImages.DataSource = LoadDataList()
        dlImages.DataBind()
    End Sub

    Public Function LoadDataList()
        Dim SQLConn As New SqlConnection(ConfigurationSettings.AppSettings("Connstring"))
        Dim SQLCmd As New SqlCommand("GetImages", SQLConn)

        SQLCmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure
        SQLCmd.Parameters.Add(New SqlParameter("@GID", 1))

        Dim DA As New SqlDataAdapter(SQLCmd)
        Dim DS As New DataSet

        DA.Fill(DS)

        Return DS
    End Function

    Public Function LoadImage(ByVal img As Byte()) As System.Drawing.Image
        Dim objStream As Stream = File.Open(img(), FileMode.Open)
        Dim Buffer(objStream.Length) As Byte

        objStream.Read(Buffer, 0, objStream.Length)
        objStream.Close()

        Response.BinaryWrite(Buffer)
    End Function

Error:
   Number of indices is less than the number of deminsions of the indexed array (underlines the img() tag from the Function LoadImage)

Again, any help would be greatly appreciated...  I think I am close, but maybe not??  Thanks again!

try something like this:

While myReader.Read
            objWriter.Write(myReader("LG_img_data"))
            bmpFile = New Bitmap(stmFile)
            Dim b As Array = stmFile.ToArray()
            Response.ContentType = myReader("LG_img_contenttype")
            Response.BinaryWrite(b)
            'Dim thisformat = bmpFile.RawFormat
            'bmpFile.Save(Response.OutputStream, thisformat)
        End While

by: AerosSagaPosted on 2005-01-10 at 10:35:12ID: 13005861

 objWriter.Write(myReader("LG_img_data"))
            bmpFile = New Bitmap(stmFile)
            Dim b As Array = stmFile.ToArray()
            Response.ContentType = myReader("LG_img_contenttype")
            Response.BinaryWrite(b)

those bottom two lines are commented out intentionally, you won't need them

Will this display the image as a bitmap (.bmp)?  I would like for it to display either JPEG or GIF....  Thanks for your prompt help!  Really appreciate it!

Well, the way I have done should work already, if I can figure out how to pass the Byte() array to the Stream Object...  I'm not sure I follow the way you have it done, I'm assuming you are using a sqldatareader instead of a dataset?  In which case, should I change mine as well?

by: AerosSagaPosted on 2005-01-10 at 10:51:29ID: 13006028

I had problems with the file stream with some formats the binarywrite worked fine for all that is why I did it that way. You should be able to reference the field inside your dataset, so you really wouldn't have to change it, but either way the binary write is whats important

The example above that you gave - is for a sqldatareader...

Would you do that code you gave above, in the while statment, before you bind it to a datalist?

I think the problem is me understanding...  I don't mind switching from a dataset to a datareader, but I need bind it to a datalist somehow...  Thanks!

by: AerosSagaPosted on 2005-01-17 at 07:33:19ID: 13064030

just create a template column, with an image in it, then use the above code to populate that one column, you can still use a dataset, whatever for the rest of the columns.

Well, I know how to display one image.. the problem is, I need to display multiple images in the same datalist.. each image is in it's own sql table record...

so in each datalist column, it will show a new image from a new record in the table...

The end results will be a datalist that looks like this....

img1        img2         img3
img4        img5         etc..

I hope this helps...
