onselectedIndexChanged on client side

I'm not new to asp.net but I have not used asp.net with javascript a lot  so I was trying this test to pop up a message when the dropdown is toggled back and forth

<script language=javascript>

function foo()
{
alert('hi there');
}

            </script>

<asp:DropDownList OnSelectedIndexChanged="foo" id="DropDownList1" style="Z-INDEX: 101; LEFT: 8px; POSITION: absolute; TOP: 8px"
                        runat="server" Width="160px"></asp:DropDownList>

but it gives the following error

BC30456: 'foo' is not a member of 'ASP.javascript_aspx'.
I don't want to handle the event on the server side? I 've tried the following also for foo

function foo(sender As Object, e As EventArgs)
{
alert('hi there');
}

            </script>

this doesn't work either...

I'm still getting the error and this is exactly what I have now...

Use OnChnage Function for JavaScript. OnSelectedIndexChanged function is for SERVER side function.

Hmmm. That works but asp.net does not recognize the OnChange attribute for a dropdownlist? Do you have any idea why?

For some controls, ASP.NET already uses client-side event handling to perform automatic postback operations. The preferred way to add client-side evnet handling code for Web server controls is via the use of the Attributes property of the Web server controls. You can do that in Page_Load event where IsPostBack=False.

     DropDownList1.Attributes.Add("OnChange","foo();");
