"Unable to retrieve schema" when using temporary tables in stored procedure

Hi yall,

i've been running into this problem a few times now and neve really found a solution for it, so i was hoping someone here might know.

Here's the situation. I'm developing in vs 2005 and creating a page in asp.net. On that page i create a SQLDataSource Element for for example a GridView. If my datasource retrieves information from a stored procedure (on sql server 2005 express) that uses temporary tables i always get the following error when i try to refresh the schema:

Unable to retrieve schame. Ensure that the ConnectionString and SelectCommand are valid.
Invalid object name '#tmp'.

In this case #tmp would be the name of the temporary table i use in my stored procedure.

If i just run the page everything is fine, and the retrieved data is shown, it's just annoying i can't get the information during development in vs 2005.

Anyone have a solution for this?

there is no immediate solution. VS isn't smart enough to deal with temporary tables :)
unless you are willing to change your database schema or create another temporary/auxiliary database for this, I don't think you will be able to use that feature.

well that's typical MS for you... it's not like it's a very novel thing, using temporary tables, if you're creating even slightly complex stored procedures your bound to be using them... Guess i'll go bug ms about a feature upgrade :p

let me know if they respond anything :)
and if you're there, ask them if they'll parse sql with cursors in it as well. that should put them off

cursors work quite well actually in sql server 2005 express, made a couple of stored proc's with em for a project i'm working on at the moment

oh yes, I'm not complaining about that. just the integration with all the "visual" tools in VS is a bit flaky.

yeah prolly, i do most of my sql progging manually, hence the use of temporary tables... so not sure about the visual tools, but i can imagine it's rubbish.

i'll keep this q open for a few days, if nobody finds a solution for the prob i'll give you the points daniel

Here's how I did it. I edited my SPROC to print the final SELECT statement that populated the #tmp table. In VS 2005 I created a Website Data Source using the SELECT statement printed from the SPROC so that I'd have the columns I needed in the Website Data Source. Then, I changed the Website Data Source to use the SPROC, and voila' it didn't remove my columns.
