overwrite files on user's machine via web app - How?

Hi,

This may sound like writing a virus! but it isn't. We have a product used by many users outside our network. Whe we make changes to the files in the app, we have an auto updater, which is part of the application. Unfortunately, I just discovered that an important component which changes quite often is referenced by the auto updater - which means the updater cannot update that component because it will be using it itself. I made changes to the updater removing the reference. Now how do I get this updater changes to the users. We don't want to have to create CD installtion and deliver to all users. Is there a way that we can point users to a site click a button and then run code that can copy the updater file, overwriting that of the users (in user's PC).

Basically I can put the file on the server and I can write the code to do the copying BUT I am not web dev savvy, so not sure about security restrictions or how to access user's file system.

I am using C# VS 2003 and the app I am talking is WinForms app.

I hope I am making sense.

Ideas, example code all appreciated.
